This has been asked before, but asking again! Has anybody managed to find any map updates for the MGS5? Been hard work trying to get any sense from MG and Naviextras.

Does anyone know how to get the map data from the vehicle to a USB?

Thanks.

I don't think the S5 uses Naviextras!

Personally, I always use Google Maps or Waze for navigation so the lack of updates for the maps of the built-in navigation system really doesn't affect or bother me.

Well the S5 isn't listed yet with Naviextras, but I'm expecting it to be in time. MG simply don't respond to anything. I'll probably end up using Google Maps

No car I've ever owned had maps worth the effort of using. I use TomTom mainly for the live traffic and speed cameras and because I'm very used to the interface etc.

There is a choice of free apps that can be used on CarPlay.

The word on the street is that:

Waze is better within the M25 (but do massively configure it to lose all the cartoon characters). It is more likely to find rat runs to save a minute or two.

Google Maps is better elsewhere in the UK and is better integrated with points of interest, which derive from Google central. It is more likely to give less fiddly routes, sticking with main roads, unless that is going to cost more than a minute or two.

Apple Maps is marginally less good for traffic but fits the ecosystem better (for example, texts appear without hiding the map.)

The only thing that I use the integrated nav for is to estimate arrival range, but I haven't used it enough to know whether it is accurate.

I use Waze all over the world and have never had a problem with it. Not sure what you mean by the cartoon characters, do you mean the other Wazers? I've never found them a problem. Tiny & insignificant.

At first I didn't like Waze because the map was covered in lots of different little (in my opinion childish) icons, the worst of which was other Wazers, but plenty of other examples. When I configured most of them away, I found it much more usable (and adult).

I agree that any of the three can be used "without problem", but there are small, subtle differences that help inform a choice between them.

I certainly use Waze in London and Google Maps cross country.

I haven't tried Apple Maps since it's disastrous introduction 13 years ago, which is a bit silly on my part, but it's a well known psychological phenomenon called the Law of Primacy.

I tried Sygic. It's a slightly different model to Waze, Apple and Google, in that the maps are downloaded rather than real time, so maybe more comparable to TomTom than to the "big three."

I get the impression that it's at its best if you are limited in your ability to get data (for example, if you go abroad without roaming.)

I couldn't get it to work in CarPlay, but it's supposed to be possible. I think it may be an issue of having the right subscription model, but I didn't really invest the time or money in fixing it.

Getting back to the original topic, I think (=hope) they will start supporting this. The navigation system is indeed sourced from NNG, which also runs Naviextras, so I hope support will just appear there at some point. I have an old friend still working there, will ask if any news about onboarding new models like the S5.

Tesla maps of course are regularly updated and Renault, Polestar and other are bult on the Google platform and hence use embedded Google Maps. Nice if MG were to follow that lead so you don't have to faff with Android Auto or Carplay

No idea. I use Tom Tom Go on my phone and mirror it for a better software experience.

At least we can use an alternative to the built in sat-nav. One of my brother's previous cars had the maps stored on CDs in a unit the boot and to update them meant buying another set at over £80.
