MGS6 getting closer

I believe that besides the price, success will also depend on charging speed and longer range – after all, in today’s standards, just under 500 km is below average. And above all, charging speed will be the key factor next year. I’d also appreciate OTA updates – I’m not sure whether the S5 already supports them.
There will never be OTA updates.

Not sure range is that important in Europe. It may vary depending on the country, but in the UK, ranges are already long enough for almost everyone.

Similarly, charging speed is already too quick for many who want to stop and have a bite to eat / drink en-route. Yes, if you are targeting people who travel long-distance for work, but this is now quite a small percentage of people overall.

Again, this may well vary by country, I'm speaking about the UK here.

OTA updates are not a panacea. Yes, people would like to have their car updated remotely. But then, supposing an update bricks your car on your driveway or the roadside?

Some makes, like Renault, have hedged their bets, with two types of updates: some that are OTA and some that require a dealer visit.

Longer range may be a thing to aim for, I virtually always charge at home, only on longer trips do I use public charging and then I try to stick with carefully chosen Tesla networks.

OTA updates option appears to be available on the S5, if so will almost certainly be available on the S6, I've checked the S5 option, but it took ages to do anything, but seems to be there somewhere 🤔
If charging speed is important the new S6 will probably be fast enough, my S5 impressed recently in Wales and didn't take long to get to 100%, whilst we wandered around a small outlet.

There's an OTA update system on the MG4, but it has never done anything. I wouldn't be too hopeful about the MGS6. I expect it needs a shift to a new software architecture, such as the IM cars have done - although the presence of workibg OTA with the IMs has yet to be confirmed.

Hopefully MG will adopt the same / a similar system.

I would also add: if the software arrives in a more mature state, without obvious bugs, then how it can be updated is much less important / relevant.

Many people just want software that works, they are not so bothered about new feature upgrades that arrive later.

Perhaps just a few of us are expecting too much for our miserly budget @tsedge? 🤣🤔😂

Well there's the inevitable comparison with Tesla. But Tesla have been doing vertical integration and their own software for 13+ years, so it is going to take time for others to fully catch up.

I would say if OTA updates are the most important thing, buy a Tesla.

The final thing I would add is that OTA updates can come with some drawbacks:

1. The manufacturer, in the new vertical model, typically has to write their own code to replace mature OEM components that already work well - note that with Tesla, lots of features that other cars have as standard (like rain-sensing wipers, automatic high beam) took a long time to come out.

2. If the hardware is over-simplified the software-heavy replacements can be a poor substitute - e.g. Tesla again, without a rain sensor the wipers have been griped about a lot.

3. It incentivises the manufacturer to create their own walled garden and to ignore standards. By contract OEMs have to embrace standards to increase their sales. So you end up with less choice - e.g. Tesla not supporting CarPlay / AndroidAuto and only supplying their apps, whether they are the apps you want to use or not.
