Ncap fail for mg3 hybrid

As there are more consumer rights before a car is 6 months old and mine will hit that mark in 2 weeks time, I am writing to my dealership rejecting the car quoting the NCAP results and MGs apparent blatant refusal to rectify a proven safety problem for existing users. Letter will be posted on Monday "Special Delivery" with e-mailed copies to follow. I'm giving them 7 days to respond.

MG have already stated that they will not be (voluntarily) recalling affected vehicles to make repairs. Dealers are not going to do anything without MG backing. In my case I just want to make sure it's on record in writing with my MG dealership and also MG UK, that I registered the problem and requested resolution before the 6 month deadline.

Sorry IAM a bit puzzled where on the internet has officially MG said they won't be recalling vehicles? If the Dvsa says they will be doing a Recall MG won't have a choice Dvsa it a bit more powerful than car . manufacturers .

MG won't VOLUNTARILY recall the cars, but if the DVSA get involved, you are right: MG won't have a choice.
It's a safety issue so I can almost guarantee that DVSA are involved with this issue. Just like the Stellantis , Peugeot, Citroen,DS cars with the airbag fault , all cars have been recalled back to 2013 unfortunately that was a code red from Dvsa so all cars are off the road till fixed .

If you look back and read the link I posted, I think the second entry in this thread, MG quite clearly say they will make a fix for new cars, and are not planning to touch cars already in ownership.

Yes as I have already stated it won't be up to MG to decide. The powers from elsewhere will decide. Obviously they will say new cars because they are getting built in factory so it's easier for the fix . It's a tad more awkward for cars already on the roads or for sale at the dealership, a fix doesn't happen that quick. But that's just my opinion, if it doesn't happen I will be back at the dealership looking for another car ,as the car won't be fit for purpose.?

Quite agree, and I think they will end up doing something ( or perhaps I just have too much faith in companies to do the right thing!), but I just wanted to point out where they had said they won't be recalling vehicles, although I do accept they just say the upcoming fix won't be on owned cars. They don't talk about further action.

I think we just have to wait, let them plan a proper response, register our concern at a dealer (mine is back in soon regarding ongoing issues, so I'll chat to them then) and then if nothing does happen a formulated response from owners needs to be done. After all, it's our safety, insurance implications, and resale values that are affected.

Yes Its pretty frustrating but hopefully we all have a happy outcome, I only bought mine a month ago so a bit p......d just like yourself.Traded a Toyota hybrid in for it what was I thinking?

MG are a budget brand with a stack em high sell them cheap mentality that is unfortunately reflected in a lot of their dealers and certainly MG UK's attitude.

I remember a while ago a member with an MG 4 contacted MG UK customer services about an issue, they were having no joy getting the issue resolved with the dealer. MG UK replied with it's nothing to do with us contact your dealer we just supply them the cars.

I wouldn't hold my breath on this issue!

What car go into a bit more detail with quotes from MG and a recommendation to look at alternative cars.

Euro NCAP, Europe’s leading safety testing organisation, has warned consumers to avoid the MG 3 after it suffered a serious safety failure during crash testing.

While it was undergoing the frontal offset crash test, – in which the car is driven front-on into a barrier – the MG 3’s driver’s seat latching mechanism failed, causing the driver’s seat to twist during the impact.

This led to a more severe impact on the crash dummy’s right leg, resulting in a "poor" score for protection for that body region, and prompting an immediate update for the car.

Euro NCAP stated it has never seen a failure of this type since it started testing passenger vehicles in 1997.

The testing also found the dummy’s head would "bottom out" the airbag and hit the steering wheel, resulting in a head protection score of only "adequate".

MG has already committed to improving the driver’s seat latching, and it will start to implement changes to the driver’s airbag from October. However, these changes will not be made retrospectively to vehicles already delivered to customers.

A statement issued by MG following the report said: “Based upon a specific concern raised in the Euro NCAP test regarding a mechanism on the driver's seat, which did not affect the overall safety rating achieved by MG3 Hybrid+, MG is proactively investigating this and working closely with the relevant authorities.

“With a technical appraisal underway, we are presently not in a position to add any more at this stage. We wish to reassure all customers that Euro NCAP's feedback is valued and that MG is prioritising the matter and will naturally, be providing further updates.”

Despite the serious failure, Euro NCAP still scored the MG 3 four stars out of five for safety, stating that its scoring system does not allow for a reduction in such a situation.

Euro NCAP plans to review its testing protocols, as they believe this case has highlighted a "rare gap" in its scoring system.

This comes after MG already made improvements to its safety systems following a lacklustre three-star rating from ANCAP – Euro NCAP’s sister organisation serving Australia and New Zealand.

“It is troubling to find a car on sale in 2025 with a fundamental weakness in its seat latching mechanism, an essential part of the car’s occupant restraint system,” said Dr Aled Williams, Programme Director Euro NCAP. “This fault has been reported to the relevant Type-Approval authorities so consideration can be given as to whether a vehicle recall should be issued.

“For that reason, we would recommend that consumers consider alt
ernatives to the MG 3.”

At least it mentions consideration being given for a recall! Damage probably already done to the MG 3 model sales even with the chat about a fix

Its not anything new Hyundai had to do a recall in 2022 for various models due to seat belt pretentioners not operating correctly. Hasn't damaged their reputation?

Hyundai are a more established brand and I'm not saying it will damage the whole MG brand but could put people off buying the MG 3 especially with articles like the one above recommending people seek an alternative car to the MG 3. Could also impact used values, not an issue if the car is on pcp as it will be the finance company that takes the hit.
