Not as over the top as you might think. Number plate recognition is a major part of the road safety system over here for heavy vehicle drivers. Also, every speed camera and point to point camera records every rego number.
There's a lot of average speed cameras and surveillance cameras over here too. I can see the country lanes which aren't covered becoming very busy until they realise and install cameras on them which will cost more than they collect in revenue.

15,000 miles at 1.5p in my HS PHEV will cost me £225, but I've saved nearly £1,000 in fuel costs alone (petrol + electricity v petrol) compared to the same twelve month period in my previous petrol car.
My main gripe is that I will be charged fuel duty for my approximately 4,000 per year in France when I paying their fuel duty and tolls. 4,000 miles when I'm not contributing any wear and tear to British roads!
Instead of charging me for my mileage in Europe, Rayner should have toll booths in the ports to charge all European electric and PHEV cars a lump sum of £15 to cover their wear and tear on our roads. Cheaper than most French tolls.

How about you all just get over it. Big Data AI pretty much knows all your movements already, your electricity usage patterns, and even the fact that you are writing about mileage blockers on social media, etc etc. Was everyone so naive as to think the governments would not have to find a way to substitute the loss in fuel duty with the switch over to EV’s? I guess the EV honeymoon period is coming to an end and to rile against it is futile. Just enjoy your EV’s for what they are; it is inevitable that governments find ways to tax everything.

Get over what!?

Just because it's inevitable doesn't mean we can't voice our opinions.

To be honest I must be naive, coz I never gave the government substituting the loss in fuel duty, a second thought. 🤪
Do agree, though that they've suddenly realised hey! We can screw EVs now they've got a good foothold. And yep, still enjoying my EV, and not worrying what the government might do next. Coz I can't do owt about it. 🙂👍

Overall I think we can agree that it will be bloomin' difficult for the government or anyone else to monitor how many actual miles anyone does if that person decides to fiddle it.

Aye my plan was to freewheel reverse down all hills then I remembered I’ve no clutch or gearbox.
That reminds me - I “drove” a beclutched and gearboxed car a couple of days ago. What a performance - I even failed myself 🥴

AI what's that ! Oh yeah something artificial, so not real. There is no intelligence involved it's just glorified mass data processing, and if the data doesn't exist as it wouldn't for monitoring everyone's mileage then it will make it up, as it does now. (hence why we need to check AI answers for correctness now). :)

I think they just need to employ some extra people, implement tracking software and apply minimum mileage calculator. That will charge the minimum for the minimum mileage ANPR has spotted you point to point for the 12 month period. A simple software that knows distance between the cameras. Similar to average speed cameras.

You may dispute or appeal it, since you chose not to input the correct mileage which should be thereabouts and your appeal failed. We will charge you admin costs for making us audit your account. Red tape UK. I can see it now. Honesty is best lol

Ive even heard of different ideas to do with ULEZ exemptions from secretive ULEZ staff to drive a 90s classic. We know when looked into by third party auditors a large fine plus backdated costs for 4 years is coming down the road. Not to mention fraud charges. Not worth it.

Hmmm, ChapGPT et al was not to which I was referring. There are big data sets with deep AI engines out there. Tracking mileage or charging behaviours will be relatively child’s play by 2028 when the levy comes in.

The issue there will be when it stuffs up and you have to fight the authorities with some sort of proof that you right and they are wrong ..... in the end, even if you win it will cost you .....

I think we need to work on natural intelligence before we even think about trusting artificial intelligence to do a better job .....

I'd love to see someone try to track my charging behaviour when, for 9 months of the year, it comes from my own solar panels ;)
At your annual service, at time of sale, or a default 10,000 miles until you do declare it. The levy will rise in today’s prices to at least 6p/mile, as it should, to put it on a par with fuel duty. It is simple and unavoidable political arithmetic.

As it should. WOW. Bet not many EV drivers will agree with that. 🙄🤪
