I got the impression from the video that it relies on the wireless CarPlay connection only, so only newer MG models (e.g. MGS5) might be able to support it via an update.

It’s probably quite a lot of effort to implement so I doubt it will happen but they have a great opportunity here and I would be seriously impressed if MG did this.

As a side note after test driving a few different brands recently I thought that the MG UI was actually one of the better systems.

I don't have an iPhone, never will and certainly don't want my car's UI to be tailored to a specific overpriced brand of phone.

Having just got my Android phone to work properly in the car for the first time since we got it in July 23, I would be reluctant to be without it.

I can play any tunes I like from my Amazon Music account, use Google Maps, and last but by no means least, can make and receive calls easily and in a way that I can hear them properly through the car's speakers.

For me, it's a game changer.

Well quite, but nearly 2 years!!! I got mine going 20 minutes after getting the car but that's because I had already bought the $20 "wireless" USB adaptor from AliExpress and so just needed to plug it in and drive around to confirm it worked

Indeed, and it also supports my wife and her iPhone via Apple Carplay.
Both Android Auto and Apple Carplay are supported just fine thanks.

For me, it's a game changer.

I've used it for a decade. I certainly don't want to see cars not support it. One of the serious drawbacks of a Tesla IMHO.

Yeah. We tried loads of different leads, different phones.

I'd almost given up and was going to wait until the service this summer and get one of the sales folk to show me how it worked with one of their leads.

But then I saw a thread that persuaded me to give it another go (ordering another lead) and that worked.

Yeah, IDK why really, I bought leads that said they were AA compatible.

The last lead kind of half worked. When I was using Google Maps with the last lead I bought, and then plugged the phone in, Google Maps would appear for 1 second, then disappear. It would not reappear on the phone. Instead, the list of directions would pop up instead.

Very odd.

So we were stuck with the car's SatNav for ages, which, in the main, was OK, but one or two journeys went catastrophically wrong, because it did not know where the place was, despite purporting to.

I got mine going the day after buying a new phone that supported Android Auto. The previous one having died of grief while arguing with an Ionity charger. Absolute revelation. Game-changer.

Weird, I used AA for a while, found it worked best via a wireless adaptor but AA is so clunky and does not play well with other stuff. It wants full control of everything and that just didn't suit me.

I now use an 8" tablet mounted on the dash to run TomTom maps and a bluetooth speaker to play books and music. works fine for phone calls as well. The media centre is mostly blanked when I drive.

CarPlay Ultra will NEVER come to current MG models, and possibly any sold in the future. MG just does not have Apple prestige!

I learnt the ways of the compatible cable via my previous car, a VW Polo.... very ficky and would only work using a certain brand of cable... I didn't leave it in the Polo and it works fine in the 5LR.

It lives in the car as I can't remember the brand now...

I find Anker cables to be the best. Have no issue with CarPlay now.
