Problems sourcing a suspension coil

2022 ZS EV Trophy and one of the rear coils has snapped.

Dealer has ordered one from MG a week ago and no sign of it. There are no other aftermarket parts suitable for it apparantly

Anyone else having the same issue ? Begs to question what the warranty is worth if relatively common parts are hard to source !!

To be honest, probably delays on your dealer's side. Most garages seem to prefer not having any parts in stock to save money and then it's the case of 5 people passing messages/parts orders around between the dealer, MG office and parts storage unit ... until the parts eventually turn up and then they forget to call you until the week after ...

Normally if it's urgent the part/s arrive next day. Dealers keep only normal service items. Less urgent parts are ordered once a week & arrive whenever, usually within 3-4 days. A coil spring breakage isn't very common. It doesn't surprise me it's taking a bit longer.

Coil spring breakages in the ZS EV seem to be more common than other makes. Both my rear springs were done under warranty, and I know a few others on the forum have had them done. I did wonder if they used springs from the petrol and hybrid models by mistake as they are lighter than the EV.

Snap! My 2022 ZS went for its first MOT this morning and surprise surprise… broken rear coil spring. Parts on back order - only 10 days to get it retested for no additional fee. And of course, car is legally undriveable as it now doesn’t have a valid MOT. Good times.

Currently spring breakages on all makes of vehicle are at an all time high, mostly due to the state of our roads. The suspension on the facelift MK2 ZS's is heavier duty than the MK1's, or so my dealership told me. It's been revised for a better ride. The MK2's are slightly heavier too so did indeed need that. My dealer sells MG, Citroen & Peugeot. They tell me they all break springs about the same amount. My neighbours relatively new Ford Kuga broke a rear spring a month ago...it's quite common.

A fair point. However, there does seem to be a disproportionality high failure rate of specifically, rear springs on these specific vehicles. MG know this, and amazingly haven’t addressed it by at least having a plentiful supply of OEM replacement springs available for dealers to fit.

I’m still waiting for the dealer to contact me about my replacement - and I have a legally unusable (no mot) car, until they do.

Mine’s a mk2. Not a word from the dealer yet. Pretty poor service, to be honest. (Sandicliffe MG, Lincoln if anyone wants to know).

My advice to anyone with an MG ZS EV that’s coming up for its first MOT - check your springs now (I couldn’t feel or hear that I had a broken spring) and get the ball rolling with regards their warranty replacement, so that you’re not left in the lurch in a situation like this.

Good advice! I had my first MOT recently with my 2022 ZS, heard some funny clunking noises going over speed bumps and having experienced a broken coil with my previous car, dreaded the news! Especially because my MOT was not going to be with my "friendly" local mechanic but with a MG garage () as part of a service plan - you know how it is! Luckily, all good, pass!

I was advised by MGUK when chasing for a courtesy car after battery failure, that they only supply a car if the dealer has diagnosed the fault, and the hold up is due to non availability of parts or a technical issue. If you meet those conditions, and a broken spring that no one can get plainly does, get the dealer to apply to MG for a courtesy car.

An update for those following along at home: still no spring. Was allegedly due in at the dealer yesterday… it didn’t arrive. Shocking service from MG - giving otherwise ‘good’ dealers and service centres a bad name since the day the Chinese took over.

Hello Paul. Yes, that's poor but at least it almost certainly means your new spring is not far away. I will say that it's only since the Chinese took MG over, particularly SAIC, that MG cars have shown a really significant improvement in quality. Spares like springs are not an everyday failure item & so tend to take longer to get. All manufacturers get them fail especially with the state of our roads just now. I spent many years in the motor trade & it's always been the way. Guessing your spring will arrive anytime now. Hope so.

Hmm... obviously not an everyday failure item, but still a fairly common failure item across all manufacturers. Had them go in a Porsche and 2 in our BMW.

In both cases, the repairers didn't have them in stock, but the arrived the next am, direct from the manufacturers warehouse in the UK.

There is no reason that an MG dealer should not be able to obtain such a part within 24h, apart from incompetence on the part of MG.
