Rear sidelights

I was driving down the motorway in my MG4 Trophy and other cars kept flashing me. When I stopped I looked at the rear and noticed that my side lights were not on and only came on when I had the lights on full at the front. Is that supposed to be the case?

Was this in daylight? You're not supposed to have any running lights on the rear of the car during daylight hours.

If the lights are in Auto and no lighting is actually needed (according to the car, or you've manually turned the auto lights off via the toggle switch on the stalk) then only the front DRLs (Daytime Running Lights) will be on. When lighting is required then side lights should first come on, and this should give lighting at both the front and rear; main lights (dipped) are the next setting, followed by full beam (either auto or manually).
