In New Zealand its not mandatory either
And, my own view is that the world has gone crazy over the top with stuff like this.
Pedestrians should be on the look out..

I should think so; my Mark 1 certainly does.
[ Edit: It's the "ufo" sound. ]
It may not be audible from inside if the windows are closed.

My Mk 1 does not emit a noise when reversing. (UK)

Mine does beep if a pedestrian crosses my rear whilst I am reversing.
However, I'm not sure if the pedestrian hears it also? ?

That is the internal warning of something approaching the rear flank of the car.
It is nothing to do with the car warning pedestrians etc of an approaching car.
