Watch out if you use any kind of granny charger outside. They ain't necessarily waterproof!

I've just completed a V2L adaptor for my MGS6, using bits cannibalised from a non-working, Cord branded granny charger from eBay. (470ohm PE to PP, PE to CP open circuit, fyi.)

Taking the donor granny apart to disconnect the leads, I discovered the guts to be coated in water. Despite being labelled IP65, it doesn't seem that resistant 😱.

There were no puddles but it was thoroughly wetted; loads of corrosion - and the LCD display polariser falling off. No way would I dry that out and trust it.

I think the takeaway is beware with all grannies.

I've been using an Electraline 300180 (X-Large size) to store my own granny in and also to protect the charger if I have to use it outside (camping trips etc).

Lidl did offer these for a time but I've not seen them there for a while.

Enjoy.

If it was that wet then it sounds like it wasn't in accordance with its IP rating .. or it had been left in a deep enough puddle that water was able to find a way in over a long-enough period of time.

I have to admit that in the months I used a granny I was always concerned about leaving it out, so used to kick it and the extension under the car while in use. Just to keep it out of direct rain.

S'pose I'm lucky i can get me car, very close to the front door, and the socket is in the Hall. So the actual box thingy is in the Hall, nice and dry. Even though it's s'pose to be totally water proof, don't think I'd trust it. As said, at the very least, shove it under the car.

I carry my granny cable in a plastic toolbox. I’ve cut holes to allow the cables in and out and when closed it keeps rain out.
