So can you charge for free at Tesco?

Not any more.
The PodPoint type2 EVSE are one of the cheapest out there and you will need a type2 single phase 32A cable plus the PodPoint app to 'confirm' the charge.

You can charge for free for the first 15 minutes.
It then drops out unless you have funds in your PodPoint account.
