£275 - over £800 for a bit of a repair. Done with a shopping trolley we think while parked

They'll be preparing and spraying the whole panel - hence the cost of paint (which still seems exorbitant) and the labour.

Ouch!!
Who did you go to?
The quote I have posted above is from the body shop recommended but the dealer I have tried several in my area £275 was the cheapest but had £400 and £550 quoted all saying it’s very difficult to match the colour so no guarantee it will not be noticeable depending on lighting best to over spray onto too the front wing and rear door is what I have been told on a new car.! Couldn’t believe it.
The quote above £800 is to remove and refit the mirror , door handle and plastic trim from the bottom of the door and just spray the whole door.

Was also told by 2 others they would do it unless I put it through the insurance so is it any wonder why insurance is so expensive.

It is correct to blend in to the rear door & wing, otherwise just spraying the door most likely won't get a panel to panel match.

Les, get a dashcam. One with parking mode plus front and back cameras. At least then there's a chance you could see who did it and share the video with the police.

Hi Stuart yeh you have a point but I’m not sure the police would be interested in this kind of thing even, if they could find them that did it.

Alb I did remember this when I open the link, glad you got it fixed and the person that did agreed to pay for it.
What really was annoying about the whole thing is when was a body shop and a very reputable one at that, say to you we only do insurance work so you need to make a claim, is it any wonder that insurance is going up like it is,
I had seen the repair they did on my neighbors car MG5 same colour, they had it for around 5 months waiting for parts to arrive but when he got it back Xmas eve I think it was it was like a new car.
So I went straight to them to get a quote to be told we don’t do retail work only insurance claims ridiculous.
Thanks for all the comments go and try a couple more bodyshops tomorrow.

It doesn't look like the panel has been dented so at that price I might be tempted to touch up the bare metal with a little red paint and try a red colour restorer polish and see how much it hides the scratches. You'll know they are there but most people probably won't see them.

Well ian you can’t really see from pictures but there is a dent about golf ball size and the marks are much deeper than I could show in a picture also get your mail into them

I called a local dint & scratch repair specialist who undinted my Ioniq for £70.
It had had a door-open knock (I suspect) on the wing.
The result was like new. I couldn’t tell where it had been.
Have a look around for a local Repair specialist. Like Chips Away.

In my case there was no issue matching the colour so I don't believe that complicates things unduly if the paint shop is competent.

It’s hard to see from the pics - but I would consider having it specialist dent removed and touched in rather than pay and have 3 panels painted or insurance claim (I guess you have excess to pay). Worth taking it to a specialist dent removal to have a look. The results can be excellent.

I had a whole rear quarter on a Toyota GT86 resprayed 6 months ago with a minor filler repair to the wheel arch. Flat red.

£480.

Chipsaway. Done at one of their repair locations not in the driveway

Repair sorted by MG dealer now as new again the reason I decided to let them do it was because the MG bodywork and paint in place and is fully guaranteed against any defects by MG as the rest of the car plus it was done at a reasonable price by a MG dealership at half of the price of the other. They removed the door all its trim mirror and handle painted it and refitted it so in the end did perfect job9C231403-35E0-4610-9A8C-CFF9971AC620.jpeg2063A21C-27D7-4494-B00F-2191F3E02113.jpeg

Glad you ended up with a good result for a reasonable price, really annoying though.
I've only bought one other brand new car before the MG, an Astra back in 2006.
I remember the horror of stuffing the front end into a hidden rock in a beauty spot car park in the first month of ownership.
I think that's why I've mostly bought 3 or 4 year old cars in the intervening years, they've already long since lost their factory virginity, so it's a more relaxing experience to be honest.
No body damage on the 4 as yet, 2 months and 1600 miles in, but I know my day will come 😭

Thats a decent price.

I paid almost exactly the same to have a small dent in a wheelarch and a rear quarter repaired last spring at a bodyshop
