Thinking about an MG4. What do I get?

I have a bit of money that I am expecting in early October and I'm thinking of swapping my Dacia Sandero for an MG4, but have some questions that the hive mind may be able to advise on.

I am planning on keeping this car for years. It was the MG or a Leaf, but the MG has CCS charging, the V2L potential, and longer range

I've seen almost new SEs for about £18k. That's about the most i want to spend.
Should I go for one of them or perhaps a 2 year old car? SEs of that age seem to be about £13-14k and Trophy's about £16k. New Trophy's are about £23k which is more than I would like to spend.

Is there much in the Trophy that actually is useful and warrants the extra over an SE other than the longer range? I rarely drive more than 80 miles in a day, and most is local trips..

Is it better to get a 2025 car as it should have all the latest software updates and won't be at the risk of some uninformed owners shoddy charging regime?

Gaz, to the forum.
You can get an SE in long range. A brand new car is always nice. Good luck.

The Trophy has additional driver assist features, electrically folding wing mirrors, electrically adjustable front seats, heated seats and steering wheel, fake leather trim, and additional cameras that allow a top-down 360° view (as well as a reversing camera ... not sure if the later SE spec cars have this camera). If they're not important to you (they weren't to me) then go for an SE.

Most of these cars are really low mileage. It really doesn't matter how the previous owner used to charge it if the car only did 5-20k miles.

It matters a lot less than ICE cars with previous owners not changing oil or hammering the car with cold engine.

Welcome to the forum. There is a middle option if you want the long range. There is an SE Long Range (LR) which has the same battery as the Trophy, just SE trim. Personally that's what I went for as I didn't need all the extras that are in the Trophy. I'm sure there must be some good used examples out there.

We added a reversing camera to our SR SE which cost several hundred pounds.

Newer SE models come with the camera and rear wiper.

Prefer the LFP battery, which suits us fine as we rarely exceed the range.

Agreed. Back when I got mine, when the only option was list price, the SE LR was £2.5k more expensive than the SE SR ... £2.5k buys you a hell of a lot of kWh, even at motorway prices.

I rarely do trips which exceed the range of the SE SR, so it was a no-brainer for me.

My local dealer had a 2023 MG4 Trophy in red, under 6000 miles, dealer serviced, 1 owner from new for £16500. I say had as it's now been sold, but it shows there are some bargains out there.

There is a 2023 XPower on Autotrader for £18,995 and have been a few at sub £20k so if you want miles of smiles that is another option if you are looking for sub 4s 0-60 and you can trust your right foot to keep you legal

That's what a bloody good test drive is for. At least an hour on all roads inc Motorways. Any sign of the vibes walk away.
