Hi Everyone,

I need some help with type2 cable charging issue. It has started about 3 wks ago, if I`m charging my MG4 Trophy at work with the Type 2 cable that came with the car, the charge stops randomly between 57-65%. It doesn`t ,atter if I started from 20% or 40%, it`s always in that rnage that it stops. I have restarted it in the app and will charge for another 5%ish then stops again.
We have over 10x charging points at work (7kW), and tried several of it and noticed the same issue.
It does not happen on fast charging or at home charging with the granny cable.
I`ve checked and do not have a scheduled charge in place or a limit of % set up on the car.
I had the car for 2 years and only started to this. Could it be the cable faulty or is a CCU fault?

Thank you very much

If you've had it for two years it must be a phase one car (without the rear wiper) and so susceptible to the CCU fault. Sounds very likely that's what it is.

Can you please tell us the version of MG4 that you have. Your profile says 'Not an MG'.

To be accurate 7kW is considered fast charging (I was corrected on that point a while ago) so when you refer to it do you mean DC rapid charging with a tethered cable?

Have you tried a non-work 7kw charger, as usually found in supermarket carparks? I see that Tesco North Harbour has podpoints - they use an app.

When the charge stops how many cars are charging at your work? It may be the load is being controlled across the chargers and the MG does not like it.

Can you borrow someone else's cable at work to try? And they can see if your cable affects their charging.

Is your cable rated for 32 Amps?

Does your cable plug fit snuggly in the charging port? Do the innards of the plug look shiny or dirty?

If you reduced the charging current in the battery page if the infotainment screen you might be able to charge past the switch off range, but it charging will need to start nearer that zone to avoid excessive time.

Usually with the CCU failure you have problems with all AC charging including granny charging so it could be just a cable problem. However every fault can show different symptoms.

Since you don't get it in fast charging or AT HOME it suggests it is not the CCU. Ask at work and talk to the charger providers. They may have put a limit on how much you can charge. Some do it so you do not hug the charger so others can use it.

Sorry for the late reply, only got the notification now..

It’s an MG4 Trophy Long Range, 2023 plate.

I’ve asked colleagues at work and they don’t seem to have the same issue (they have different brands). The amount of cars varies, but I did try at late afternoon when there was only 2 more cars and still stopped charging at 62%.

I haven’t tried a non-work 7kW so will do at North Harbour just to test it out. Also need to borrow someone’s cable on Monday at work to test that.

The plug fits snuggly and they look quite clean.

I will test the reduced charging current!

Thank you very much for all the tips, I shall report back on Monday!
