What car did you have before the X Power. ?

Had a Focus ST, lovely colour!
I got bored with stirring the gearbox in the increasingly heavy traffic. That car had amazing brakes, far better than the XPower's - though the XPower would leave the ST in it's dust. If a performance car was ever under-braked, it's the XPower.

X Power replaced that, always liked look of MG4 in general and was super excited when the X Power version was released.

Immediately prior to the XPower I had the MG3 Hybrid, I only had this for 3 months before deciding I wanted to go full EV, and the XPower offered everything I wanted in a car.

Before the MG3 Hybrid, I had a VW Polo for 3½ years. You'll notice they were both white, and I was going to look for a white Xpower, but the wife suggested the Camden Grey, and she was definitely right, it's the best colour.

I like the thread idea! My car previous to the x power (still have it) is/was my grandfathers bog stock VE v6 Commodore 60th anniversary model. The car is 18yo, but has only done 90k kilometres.
There is no comparison between this and the x power, so to get any indication of why i might choose an x power, my cars prior have been mostly performance spec cars (gti's etc), or heavily modded v8's (Holden and Corvette). I don't care for smoke in any way (from exhaust or tyres) so when something can get traction for a sub 4sec 0-100... I'm on it!
my demo model x power cost me basically the same amount as a demo model ss 6.0 v8 commodore (10ish years ago), but is faster off the line, handles better, cheaper to insure, and way way way less cost to run. Ok, the noises aren't as good as a v8's, but i don't wake the kids when leaving for work in the morning either.

Ours replaced a Tesla model 3 SR+ (leased through our company in 2021). Good intro into the world of EV's (the public charging network back in 2021 was far worse than now) with their super charger network being a game changer.

But it was never a car that you could get excited about driving - felt like an appliance, totally devoid of character - the chassis stability control was so good that it took all the fun out for me and it couldn't be switched off or dialled back. It was also too wide & long for the narrow country lanes where we live and have to drive on a daily basis. The only areas that were better than the X-Power was the drive control integration (the one pedal driving control was far better) and the brake feel, which shifted seamlessly from regen to hydraulic. Ours was the last of the US built cars and had loads of warranty issues (I understand the later Chinese built cars were better put together).

We purchased the X-Power outright as a replacement as it it was a better drive, more interesting visually, a better size, cheaper and faster. Still enjoying it a year later despite the very shaky start (do you see what I did there ), having finally accepted that the software is and always will be rubbish along with the dealers.

MG4 SE SR.

Without going into my previous cars it doesn’t really explain the journey though!

My last petrol car was a Polo GTi. Sold it for profit after Covid for an ID.3 but really wanted a Cupa Born (it wasn’t available at the time). The ID.3 was okay but a bit boring. Saw a Cupra Born and fell in love with it. Traded in the ID.3 for a profit!

The Born was a lemon unfortunately. It had something similar to the vibe issue. Like a wheel balancing problem but only over 70 mph. There were lots of other problems and dislikes (none of them got fixed) so I had enough, wanted rid of it and got a bog standard MG4 because I expected to be disappointed and didn’t want to spend loads of money on “cheap Chinese crap”.

Turns out I bloody love the thing. It’s a really good car! It’s flawed but my expectations were low. It’s easy to live with and I came to regret not buying a higher specification one.

I’m going to love it’s replacement

2016 White MG6, which was bought as a runaround in late 2022, having gone down to a single car during/post-covid, to get to the train station at the time and still have - albeit currently fixing a couple of things prior to puting up for sale. Setting that aside, I view my true last car to be a 2001 Mitsubishi Galant Ralliart VR4 Estate, 300BHP. We purchased it at 3 yrs old for £7.7k and besides the massively frequent oil changes, required very little spending on it across 16+yrs of ownership. Finally died a death due to an ABS sensor problem for which, after c. 1 year of trying to source replacement parts, I had to finally concede that none were available to have it fixed... was one hell of a family estate though and we + the kids absolutley loved it!

As mentioned elsewhere I had a 6 month old 5SE, that had replaced a 12 month old ZS 1.5.
I took a shine to the XP as it was in the dealer when I collected the ZS. It was hardly available for test drives as “it’s always on charge”! Went EV as they were silly discounted, felt the XP itch again recently but knowing I was in negative on the 5 it was only window shopping.
PCP-wise, the ZS (discounted to £16k) was £500 down, 48 months, 6k pa.
Negative on that after 12 months was around £2500 - just had to find that to upgrade to the 5SE, no other deposit. £19200 cash price.
Just 6 months into the 5, Carwow came up with £25000 prices for a new XP.
Contacted the cheapest dealer, he said we can’t work with negative, ok. Pinged the figures to my local dealer, he came straight back with a matching offer like for like, just found the difference (again!) and here we are.
Monthlies ZS v 5 were more than balanced by fuel savings.
Monthlies 5 vs XP are about a decent takeaway a month. And a lot more smiles…..
Though this time I do really have to keep it, I’ll be retiring around balloon time so the lump could well sort that out. Won’t be monthlying anything after that!

Yep, nice simple 5 spoke. Look good parked up or on the move. And so easy to clean. Can't beat um, imo.

Unfortunately the X Power wasn't available when I bought my MG4. It replaced my beloved Golf R mk7.5 (still the best version imho), with an engine tune, induction kit, gearbox remap, haldex modified for the extra power. Then some scrotes stole it.

The X Power would have similar 0-60 times, but the golf much better handling and all round engineering methinks. I still have my old S2000 though for a bit of sideways fun.

TT 225. Great to drive and great balance of comfort and speed. Maybe not the fastest, but the turbo kick always makes you smile. Unfortunately was deemed impractical.

R52 Cooper S. Like a fast go kart. Incredible fun in the twisties, but a pig around town, would twitch and judder if the revs dropped below 2500rpm. Didn't like leaving 1st gear before 30mph and the constant leaks and electrical issues essentially killed it.

LDV convoy. Slow and like jelly going around corners, but just goes, been the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned regularly driving Edinburgh to Bournemouth whilst I was living in it for work.

Triumph Tiger. Bought new and was a dream, but 3 years and 50,000 miles later absolutely everything was knackered. Wheels rusting from the inside out, exhaust rusted through at the headers, completely gone at the muffler joint, side stand snapped twice, electrics all failing. Just a complete mess.

Ducati Monster. Love hate relationship, great fun, great noise, good looking, always had something to say if it wasn't happy with you.

All gone now apart from the Convoy, which is a mobile shed/day van when I get the mountain bikes out. So gone from 4 vehicles to 2.
As an everyday vehicle the XPower blows them all away. Yes, some of the others were more characterful, more playful on the road etc. They also all caused me constant headaches in some form or another, while the XPower has been faultless in every respect.
