What Made You Choose An MG?

Read about the MG5 when it first came out. Very unsure about the reliability. Saw a used one for sale at a good price and took a chance. I have been blown away with this car. I have bought a second EV now as it is a no brainer. The MG5 does everything a medium estate should do. A lovely car to drive and has been very reliable. I would have no hesitation in recommending it!

I was investigating buying my first EV, was keen to have a relatively high seat, and a friend had bought an MG5 the previous year. She was happy with it, so I looked online to see what other models were available, and the prices. The ZS seemed to fit the bill. After three and a half years, it still does.

It’s not my first EV, but the MGS5 is my first MG.

I like the overall value for money, and think the car is fantastic for the price point.

I had briefly considered the BYD Atto 3 as well but didn’t like the design of the interior, and the wife hated the interior of the Kia EV3 which we also test drove, and spent the whole time picking faults with it.

When we test drove the MGS5 we were both impressed with it and there were no complaints from the wife.

Admittedly the EV3 GT-Line S was my first choice, but I certainly don’t regret or resent getting the MGS5, as in retrospect it offered much better value for money.

At the time I wasn’t thinking with my financial head, I was just thinking “ooh shiny”.

Hi Folks,

What made you choose an MG over a BYD or a Jaecoo etc etc?

There are numerous Chinese brands. And some are cheaper & have more tech. So why did you make the choice you did?

My reason is potentially extremely daft?
But I thought ownership of a brand that was well respected when I was a kid. Seemed better than a.n.other Chinese brand on my driveway.
Oooh, this could have been a poll.

The value proposition for us, plus sporty enough looks.

Golf-sized car for the same money (or less) than cars a size down.

Price was a big factor, and with the MG second-cheapest in the EV range at the time, it was the MG badge that sealed the deal. Next came nostalgia : my late close friend was a top MG racing driver in Australia in her 20s (1960s).

The badge was a small factor but as a lot of Citroen/Renault drivers point out in car parks, and this is a loose translation missing out the unspoken knowing smirks and slight nods of heads, "It iz very nice, mais eez not a vrai MG, c,est Chinois, iz he not?" 🤷‍♂️ Still practising, but not yet perfected a Gallic shrug.

The fact Volkwagen is made in China as is Volvo along with most of the well known UK brands, the fact it's made in China is no longer a slur on the quality, quite the reverse ..... imagine if the Europeans or the UK could make car at that quality level and at the same price point ..... but they are not in the same league on either quality or price point, are they ......

The flip side is, once all the other manufacturers have gone to the wall, will the price still be as low?

Very similar to my reasons, except in my case it was two cousins of mine who had MG sports cars, again back in the sixties.

I was visiting a local garden centre in '23 and there was a Tango Trophy on display outside, the price certainly caught my eye as did the style...much more appealing to the Kona EV I was driving at the time.
I followed it up, got a good price for my Kona privately and ordered my first Trophy LR, it was delivered within days.
I'm now driving my second '74 plate MG4 and this one is the Trophy ER, love it.

Thought about a Cyberster GT after watching this till I saw the price on the road ... I could buy two XPower new models for that sort of money

Watched a You Tube vid on the Zeekr 007 now, if that came to Australia at the price point they are talking ..... um .....

The Chinese version of a Rolls at the beginning of the second video is a very impressive bit of kit. But I dread to think what the depreciation will be! 😳
You'd have to plan to keep it forever.

Having spent the weekend looking at Volvo, Kia, VW and MG the MG build quality of the S5 felt right up there with them. The price and 0.0% deal swung it lol.
