I know this is going to sound a but simple....but can anyone advise as to 2021 MG HS Phev wheel nut size - 16 or 17mm. Have a 17mm socket but it feels a touch loose ?

Then could be 16mm or call your dealer and ask service.

I would be surprised if the wheel bolt head sizes are different on the HS to other MG models TBH.
Had a quick look and found that the optional locking wheel bolts sold, are the same for ZS / HS etc.
The ZS EV uses the space saver wheel from the older HS model, so it’s pretty safe to assume that the wheel bolts are the same at 17mm.
You could measure across the flats on the supplied wheel brace ?.
A six sided socket will be a more forgiving fit than a twelve sided socket.
