My wife and I got in the car this morning after it had sat in the driveway all night, and she immediately noticed a reasonably long v-shaped crack on the windscreen, up high and in the middle. My view of it was obscured totally by the rear view mirror. I realise this sounds unlikely but we were out driving our MG4 yesterday, both my wife and I drove, and the crack was not there.

I have cameras on the driveway and neither were set off, so I don't think anyone touched it. Has this happened to anyone else? I wonder if it is some kind of fault, as neither of us recall any kind of impact (stone, etc) striking the windscreen.

From very recent experience I can testify that the smallest of pebble, hardly making any noise hitting the windscreen, can end creating a crack half a meter long.
The impact sound was so low that if I hand been talking or listing to music I would not have noticed it.
I couldn't see no damage until 200 km later. Also temp variations at night made it grow longer and longer.

Yes! Twice, within one month of replacement. Only have the one image of the original crack:

When our car was being delivered in July 24 the driver called us to say that a crack had appeared in the windscreen during his drive and by the time he arrived it had spread from the very bottom edge right into the centre of the screen so we weren’t able to use it till a new screen had been fitted. Last week a new crack appeared from the very bottom edge of the screen so that has also had to be replaced. Neither screen had any stone chips anywhere on the screen so there must be some kind of defect in the manufacturing process. The first screen was replaced by Autoglass and this one by National Windscreens - they both did an excellent job. Photo of original crack attached - I’d forgotten that it had split into two. The most recent screen just developed a single crack.
