Hi!

I’ve joined the forum to research the ZS, as I’m not yet an owner but have seen a 2021 car with 56k km advertised for just around £10k, which seems quite affordable compared to other electric cars. I’m wondering if there’s a reliable price indication tool online somewhere which could tell me what these cars should cost, or is it a case of trawling autotrader for ads?

Also interested in hearing about generic problems affecting this model, or anything in particular which should be looked at before buying. Thanks all.

Bargains to be had for used EVs as new models come out constantly.

Will cost peanuts to run it if you can charge at home.

No idea about the ZS specifically but good luck with your search!

Thanks for the replies I got already! Do you happen to know if they all have reversing cameras? I see it mentioned as a feature in some ads, but unsure whether it might be fitted as standard and only some sellers of ZS EV actually mention it in the listing?

My wife (who I’m buying the car for) is especially keen on this feature :)

Be aware in the Winter, the reversing camera often misted up, and becomes less clear than it does in the Summer months, coupled with the front camera being out, due to internal moisture most of the Winter months for the first 5-10miles of any trip. It's a could do better, but at a cost!

Most of these will have an EVCC that won't support Tesla supercharging.

Make sure that it has had the "comfort" software/firmware updates, as the original software apparently had bings and bongs galore, as well as many glitches. It doesn't have a facility for charging to 80%, at least the Australian 2021 models.

Still a great, inexpensive EV, as long as you are prepared to put up with a few niggles.

It's all down to supply and demand - can't comment for prices in Sweden though, likely to be very different to the UK. Over here we also have sites that will give buy price for used vehicles - like webuyanycar.com, which is good to get a vague idea of value - maybe you have similar sites over there?

I think atleast here (Denmark), every model had reversing camera, the difference between the top spec and the lower spec was 360 camera....Camera in the front and wing mirrors.

But to be honest.......The reversing camera is pretty rubbish, especially if it is dark.

My kids says the reversing camera has "Minecraft" graphics.

Both image quality and the "size" of the view is limited.

The ZS EV is my wifes car, i might be a bit biased, i have a swasticar and am used to the camera quality there and i would tend to agree with the kids, the camera quality is "First gen nokia camera phones".

Good thing though, it has reversing sensors and even "Rear Cross Traffic radar" so if she is about to hit something the parking sensors will beep and show distance and if she is about the reverse out into traffic and something or someone crosses, the car will automatically slam on the brakes to save the day. I have tried this one time, when someone came pretty fast across the path i was reversing into.

Thanks for the info! As far as I’m concerned a ZS would be an ideal car for her - she rarely drives further than the local town and back, the tax would be tiny and we’d be able to keep it charged for free from our solar panels at home.

So far, however, I’ve failed to get her sold on the idea of an EV. The comment was ”the last thing I want is another thing in this house that only you have control of!” (The solar charging). She just wants another petrol car she can top up at will.

I’ve tried looking into plug in hybrids so both options would exist, but they’re expensive and limited in choice in the small hatchback size she wants, plus I know it would end up getting run on electric 90% of the time so it makes no sense to me to have the extra complexity and cost of the ICE part of the drivetrain to maintain. So for now, we are back to searching for an ICE car to get her through the next five years until she sees the light and will agree to an EV.

My conclusion for now is to let her have what she wants and I’ll change my petrol Audi for an EV in a year or so, when the cars in that size range become a bit more affordable. That will maybe make EVs seem a bit more familiar and less scary to her.

Thanks to all who have answered my questions on this thread.

Well, 2021 is most likely a 1.gen, so there is not very much to "control" it has no app.

In what sense does she mean, you have control, if you buy a charger that can be programmed to charge at the optimum time and she has the app, there really is not a lot to "control"

We have the 2.gen, both me and my wife has the app, both for the charger and the car, i have no more control over the car, than she does.

I even added a chip to the charger, so that she would be able to start it, if it loses wifi/internet connection and could not be "released" for charge by the app and i am not at home. (Just a simple mifare chip, that tell the charger it can charge). We have to have ours locked, it is facing the street and i dont want to risk, someone "sneaky" parking in my driveway when i am away or on holiday, charging "for free" :)

To be honest, if i were you i would try and atleast convince her to have a go in one, i bet, when she drives it, she will pretty quickly find that it is much easier, only 2 pedals, no gear selection, automatic parking brake, hill start assist so that it does not roll backwards when stopped on an incline.

No risk of stalling he engine, no need for her to even go to the petrol station, getting her hands dirty with petrol/diesel smell, etc.

It sounds like the decision has been made, but I note that Bjorn has bought a second hand ZS in Thailand recently. I think it is for his Thai relatives, or for when they stay there. Don't know if this would make your wife feel more comfortable about it or not, but it is his second one which is promising!

Yeah, the stereotype is that women tend to prefer EVs more than men because men like the "macho" noise and grease and fumes and things.

On the other hand some men are really into getting the latest 'tech' and stuff so tend to be into EVs for that reason.

Pebbles wasn't really interested in electric, and was even fearful with range anxiety etc. She has been much impressed with the EV once we got it.

All stereotypes should be treated with great caution of course.
