The Ultimate MG5 "Real World" Energy Consumption Thread

This month's efforts... the cold snap half way through the month killed the efficiency, but my Christmas trip to Leeds was saved by the 12 degrees on the day I drove up...

The return, today was blighted by the mid-trip fuel stop, first choice had 2 cars charging so moved on to Moto Rugby, where all chargers were in use. Luckily there were only 2 cars in front of me and I only waited 5 minutes before getting on one. I started the charge which quickly ramped up to 65Kw, before retiring for a comfort break and refreshment. Returned 30 minutes later and there was a 7 car queue for a charger.

As ever, everyone was talking to each other, forming the orderly queue, and taking their turns. It would be nice had the operators put a bit of thought into a queuing system that made it obvious who was next. The Tesla chargers were also rammed and going great guns. These aren't open to everyone, though.

The charger cut out at 82% on the car and rather than faff about to get any more charge in, I set off to finish the trip, arriving home with 17% and 33 miles remaining. This involved keeping the speed down a bit which felt a bit of a plod but it did get me home with a respectable 3.3 kw/hr average.

@jackois As you know I used Banbury as my stopping off point between Leeds and Southampton due to the number of chargers there. 6 Osprey and 12 Tesla (open to all) on one site and 16 Instavolts on another site. I have just seen that Instavolt are doubling their site to 32 rapids hopefully completed by Spring.
Banbury the home of Rapids, I have no idea why, but hopefully no queueing.

P.S. Don't tell anyone. 🤫

Not exactly an annual report, as the trip mileage was set back to zero when the car had its first service on December 22 last year, so this is for 53 weeks and 9999 miles, to be precise!

Pleased with the overall 4.2 figure, especially with the low temperatures we've all had for a few weeks now. Wouldn't be surprised if it dropped to 4.1 by the time it goes to the dealer for a service next Wednesday, however.

The average across most of the year was 4.3 and in the summer months the car, a SR, was giving comfortably over 210 miles equivalent on a full charge, and often up to 240.

The average speed highlights that I don't drive many motorway miles but I do spend a fair bit of time driving across the Peak District and the 5 seems to thrive on the hilly routes, with lots of regen!

Even so, I'm sure Les will still be a decimal point or two up on my stats!

Hi Valiant5 totally agree great figures well you my not have seen the fact that I let go of my 5 around 4/5 weeks ago ( not to sure I have done the right thing now but watch this space ) it’s gone now and when it went it was showing 4.6 for the accumulated figure from its last service back in March and I think around 7000 miles done, had been reading 4.7 all summer long and as you say doing more miles than quoted after a full charge and balancing, it would often be mid 220 to 230 but I got an offer I could not refuse for it and we had just took delivery of the wife’s MG4, same size battery 50kw ish no where near same figures and just driving it the same way and on the same journeys as best you can but hoping it improves as the weather gets better time will tell at the moment with less than 1200 on the clock it is showing 3.3 but I’m not sure I believe that figure to be honest.
Still not done the Barrel yet but will do.

Well exactly 12 months ago today I got the train from Carlisle to Portsmouth, and drove back in my 21-plate ex-demonstrator MG5EV LR Exclusive, having zeroed the long tripmeter.
Just over TWELVE thousand miles (not TWO thousand, as it doesn't give the 5th digit but does keep counting) and 4.1 miler per kilowatt hour true annual average.
I was a little bit disappointed to see it drop from 4.2 during the cold snap, exacerbated by rail strikes at the same time which meant driving my kids to school and back which added 60 miles a day in sub zero temperatures - but considering the motoring press rated the average at a measly 3.6, I can't be too disappointed.
Interestingly, I bought a 22kw Zoe in the spring, mainly for short runs and to keep miles off the MG5 (to extend its warranty life) and it has only returned 3.71 miles per kilowatt hour also read today. I guess that's a combination of the newer battery technology and the long trips done in the MG, many of which were in the 4.7 to 5 region.
563 hours of my life spent in this car! But all very comfortable and pleasurable.
All in all fine car, and one I don't intend to part with as long as my solar/wind turbine battery storage set-up continues to charge it up free 😁

Good on yer, Les! Yes, must have missed you selling your 5, hope you enjoy the 4, and your overdue trip to the Barrel!

Well that's me finished driving for December.
I did a few more miles this month and my average speed is up slightly but 3.2m/kWh was to be expected with a week or so of really cold days.
Happy New Year everyone 🎉

Here’s my December figures.
A lot of my mileage was from my trip to Heathrow from Yorkshire. On the way down two Gridserve services were completely unavailable, one had just one working (and a long queue) and the other both working but a queue! However when we got to our destination at Heston M4 services, there were 11 350w available! Gridserve said in June 2022 that they are upgrading all their existing charger at motorway services to be like the Heston one, so hopefully life will be a lot easier soon!

Range test, 100% charge to 11%. Does less miles than a smaller battery Leaf in similar 0 degree temps. Not great. Pretty much 50% loss from claimed range.

You are in the same ballpark as @JimD
The average speed suggests short journeys too?

Average daily commute is about 20 miles each way and takes about 45 minutes mainly dual carriageways but a lot of traffic.

If that was just 3 days commuting then 18.5 miles each way and 62 mins each way. If it includes other driving as well, then commute is less.

Sorry just being pedantic....it's a speciality. :)

All very rough 2 full days commute and 1 drive in plus the rest been town driving. What I find however is that in that time it does include probably an hour of talking to the lass in the car (with the heater on using electricity) and waiting for the windows to defrost in the morning which I do remotely via the app but no different than me sitting in it but it seems to add it to the session time wise as when I get in the car the current trip will already be on 10 minutes.
