MG5 owners only. Post on here what you think of the car.

I love the car. It's awesome.

I have a few minor gripes, which are pretty insignificant:
  • The window controls are the worst I've ever encountered - flimsy feeling and unresponsive. It's almost impossible to open the front windows by just a crack and yesterday the driver's window opened all the way then wouldn't close again for several seconds. A software glitch?
  • Creep is far too strong and seems to fight against the brakes.
  • Every time you change something, an animation pops up. Switching to full beams means you can't see your speed for about 5 seconds, same with driving mode. It's really annoying.
  • Charging quirks - pausing when unlocked, no response to CP voltage change unless dropped to 0 or -12v, no external indication that it's charging, no light in the charge port area, no warning if the charge port flap is open: all things I took for granted in the Leaf 40. MG have done a poor job with this.
  • Missing advertised features - glass holder, speed limit, working roof rails.
None of these detract from the exceptional value, the impressive range, the practical amount of space, and just how nice it is to drive - especially in 'sport' mode.

I generally love driving the car. Like most a few gripes, but most are livable with as this is a company car and not mine.

  • The infotainment unit is shockingly slow and unresponsive. If using built in nav it stops navigating if you get an incoming phone call. The head unit can only do one thing at a time.
  • I miss having a speed limiter. All my previous cars have had them, even my last Renault Zoe.
  • The headlights aren't the brightest out there but are comparable to the Zoe
  • KERS on number 3 setting is too strong in icy conditions. Lesson learn't very quickly and I dialed it back to number 1
  • Not having a timed charge setting is the thing I miss the most. I have an EV tariff with OVO but cannot take advantage of it unless I physically plug the car in at midnight. PodPoint say they are working on an updated app for this, but they said that last year too.
However, like most on this forum, this is a very good and certainly value for money. Its a cracking fun drive and can put a smile on your face.

I've just not done enough miles to experience most of the above though all very valid points. One useful tip re. charging is that you can tell what's going on by pressing the button on either front door and the display wakes up and gives % & miles of range. However, it's worth remembering (on the Exclusive anyway) that if you have your key with you it'll, er, unlock the door so worth bearing in mind!

It's really early days for me, thanks to lock down (working from home and no leisure travel). However, first impressions have been good. The build quality is so much better than my previous car (Toyota Auris Wagon) and the comfort is much better. Still getting to grips with the technology (haven't set up Android Auto) and home charge point still to be installed, but tips from the forum are really useful. The family loves travelling in it, but are divided on the exterior styling. I am looking forward to putting some decent mileage on later in the year when we hopefully have a European road trip.

I really envy you guys, not only for your new MGs but for the fact you don't drive anywhere.
I have to drive 270 miles a week, not through choice, and I wish I didn't. I am in my 70s' and wish I just had to drive to the shops, instead of traipsing all over the country 6 days a week.

It could be worse. 270miles/week is not that much these days (under normal conditions). 🙂

Maybe for work, but I am doing 14,500 miles a year which is basically "social" miles (more like anti-social). I would imagine that not a lot of people who don't have a company car do more than that.

After having the car for 3 days it is excellent. acceleration is great though wont use it often only to p off BMW drivers. I hope I shall be able to get over worries about range and refuelling as soon as i can do some decent journeys

I suggest you experiment with one of your most local rapid chargers so that you're familiar with it before you try a longer journey.

I's an amazing car, watch the MG podcast Monday 7:30pm, this is a great place to hear about range and might address some of your concerns, some good information for new and used ev drivers.

This is well worth doing even if just to suss out how they all work. Each company/device has their own 'quirks', whether hardware or app/payment options. I dare say in the years to come it'll just be contactless but not there yet. Be prepared that sometimes chargers are out of order too...

The only thing I miss is all round parking cameras would really help when parking at a charger other than that and one or two small niggles I love my 5

With it stood next to my daughter's 18 plate Octavia you can see the panel fit is actually quite poor, with quite wide seam gaps compared to the Skoda. The base alignment of the A pillars isn't that great.

Interior cubbyholes aren't that great. I miss having a little one low down on the dash to the right of the steering wheel. Door pockets and centre console are a bit small and, of course, the missing sunglasses holder in front of the interior lamp 😜

The head unit is quite lethargic, with the Nav in particular taking ages to start up.

The front USB sockets don't have enough space to fit anything but the teensiest memory stick and be able to close the sliding cover.
A USB power outlet rated at say 1-2 Amps on the windscreen pod would have been really useful and would have made fitting a dashcam so much easier.

Auto hold and electric handbrake don't compare to my old Passat.

Back seats not folding flat is a big pain.
The toy roof rails is a known debacle we'll gloss over with just the observation that MG smothered themselves in manure over the whole thing.

Range could have been better. A real world 200 miles with 4 up would have been welcome.

Ride is a bit wallowy, but then we're lugging around a fair weight of batteries.

Steering lacks feel.

It's a shame MG missed the opportunity to make dedicated provision in the frunk to store the granny cable and a type 2 lead, and maybe a jack, wheelbrace etc.

Lights are OK (note to people fitting LED headlamp bulbs - it ain't legal. You can be done and in 2-3 years when you go for an MOT, it'll be a fail).

That's all for now. I'll update this as and when I think of anything else.

May I ask, why do you want to turn it off ?
If you want it off while you're driving then you just press the unlock button on the door.
If want it off so passengers can get out, you can do the same, or the passenger can just pull on the door handle twice.

The reason why I would like to turn it off it’s because I’m a taxi driver and the amount of Times I’ll forget to unlock the doors when picking up and I don’t want customers pulling at the door handle. Cheers
