MG4 Rumbling and vibration

Hey. Had this is issue. It’s 100% not the tyres.
It’s the undertrays on some MG4s not being fitted and secured properly. Depending on the wind direction, your direction of travel and your speed, it catches them and flaps them causing the vibration.
Just need taking off and refitting. Yet to have them done on mine.

This is a very old thread, you’re responding to a post from November and it had been resolved since that post.
It was the tyres on mine, 100%
I changed to Goodyear vector all season and the vibration went.

I purchased the MG4 125kW model in Turkey. Many people who have bought this vehicle in Turkey are experiencing a vibration issue at speeds over 100 km/h. How did you resolve this issue, if you encountered it as well? Some individuals have mentioned that even after getting new tires and rims, the same problem reoccurs after about 1000 km. Others speculate that the issue might be stemming from the axles. Thank you.
The Turkish specification may be different from the UK. Over here, such issues have been dealt with by either balancing the wheels or replacing the tyres if they are mis-shaped (due to standing for too long at ports / on ships).

It hasn't been a recent issue - except on the new XPower AWD version where people report a vibration.

I dont think anyone has reported this recently on the 125kW version in the UK.

Whilst at the dealers I looked at all the MGs there and 90% had the tyres fitted slightly wrong. On the tyre there is a little red / yellow dot which is supposed to line up with the valve. I,m not completely sure why, but was informed several years ago by a tyre fitter that it was to help with the balancing, the tyre would need less weights added if these points lined up. It both makes sense and does,nt , you choose? I do not know if I was being fed an urban myth or not.
Common on all cars.
I can't ever remember having a car, new or second hand, that had these dots lined up.

Thank you for your response. Many of the vehicles arriving in Turkey have issues, and the services have not been able to identify the cause of the problem. We hope that the problems will be resolved; otherwise, a very negative image will emerge for the MG brand in Turkey.

Sorry to hear that, MG need to do better. There were a lot of issues when it first launched here but quite a few have been addressed, I would have thought newer markets should be getting better cars as a result, sad if that is not true.

I want to provide an update. Service representatives mentioned that they have identified the balance/vibration issue in MG4 vehicles sent to Turkey to be related to the rims. They talked about a replacement, but there hasn't been any action taken yet. Many people have parked their vehicles in the garage and can't use them. I'm also sharing a picture of the rims in the vehicles sent to Turkey.

Interested in this issue as I have just taken possession of mine its the 77kw long range in Australia and is fitted std with alloy rims with the wheel covers and Bridgestone tyres. I noticed on highway drive tonight that at 100kph there is a definite vibration that is odd in the way it feels. Using ACC to hold a steady speed on nice road surface, It is really smooth and vibration free for a count of around 3 seconds, then vibration for a longer period approx 6 seconds then smooth for 3 seconds and continues with regular pattern. Hoping its tyres or wheels and will raise the issue at its first 1000km check up. Anyone have any ideas. A but concerning on a brand new car...

@DerekH What bridgestone's does the ER come with? Is it Turanza T005?
If so, I believe the x-power is also equipped with the same and people have complained about vibrations at between 60 and 70mph (~100kph).

I wonder if it's the nature of low rolling resistance light weight tyres.

Turanza 6 are hopefully better in this respect.

You wouldn't get a pattern of that length at that speed if it is the wheels or tyres, must be something else in the drivetrain.

Yes It has the Turanza T005 EV tyre on it. Thanks and interesting. I will bring this up with the dealer on first service.

Yeh that's my worry too. If it was constant or a faster change in pattern then perhaps tyres. If it didn't become very smooth then it wouldn't be as noticeable as it would be constant vibration. But as it has this smooth cycle it is very noticeable and consistent. When it's smooth it is very smooth almost like power is shut-off for a short period then reapplied?? But speed remains constant. I have tried with and without OPD, ACC and in each mode (eco, normal etc) and no effect

Raising this again here, this time in the UK. While waiting for my 2023 MG4 Trophy to arrive, dealer kindly lent me another MG4 Trophy 2022 make with 17” rims, continental tyres, and was super smooth with no rumbling/humming noise at any speed. Took delivery of the new one today and immediately noticed a humming/rumbling low frequency sound that kicked in between 60mph to 70mph as described above. This one has 18” rims and Bridgestone tires. Got in touch with dealer who said he was going to contact MG about it. Any new developments/advice about this?

I know it’s a personal thing, but I had Bridgestones on a VW Golf PHEV and absolutely hated them !.
Poor traction and the road noise ( as they aged ) was terrible.
They are a hard compound, which can be seen as great for longevity, but a poor choice for an EV in my opinion.
At the right time, I switched all four for a set of Good Years and the difference was night and day !.
I would never have Bridgestone’s again TBH.

I had Bridgestone Turanzas on a new Kia Sportage back in the day and replaced them straight away.
never done that with any tire before.

harshest ride of any tire I have had on a car
.

I have the equiv of trophy 77kw model here in Australia. I made comments earlier about mine having this issue from new. When it went in for its 1000km complimentary service I mentioned the issue. The dealer sent it for wheel balance and said rears were a lot out of balance. Now I gave noticed a significant improvement but the vibration is still noticeable fron around 100, 110 kph. It's an odd vibration as it occurs in a pattern and rotates as follows. Around 6 or so seconds vibrates then smooth for around 2 secs. So not in direct wheel rotation pattern so I suspect something else. It's not super bad so leaving it for now but it is there at the higher speeds so you wouldn't pick it up on a test drive or in slower traffic conditions so can understand that even a dealer could miss it if they test drove it. I find it interesting that a recall on the xpower has been issued and in aust sale's suspended until an "anti vibration" part arrives from MG and is fitted. I am wondering if same issue but more noticeable due to the dual motors???

The Turanzas on my Skoda were awful for traction, replaced them with Goodyears and the grip was night and day better, especially in cold weather.

This is similar to what others have reported - however the XPower vibration sounds different and I think that is what the new part is for.

I’m also from Aus I picked up a MG4 Xpower and on the drive home notice a vibration between 80-110 and really bad at 100. The next day the all Xpowers were put on a sales stop and recalled for steering arm damper upgrade. The new part was installed and made absolutely no difference. It’s now back with the dealer until they can sort it out. The Xpower has Bridgestones and there seems to be issues with tyres and balancing but service manager doesn’t seem to think this is the problem?

Interesting but not so good for you... mine runs the Bridgestones too. Wheel balancing did make a lot of difference and they did say that that they were way out of balance.. were in aust are you? West coast?

I’m in Sydney. I have left the car with them to sort it out and don’t want it back until they sort it. Just frustrating, the loan MG 4 64 has it as well but not as bad.
