MG4 Rumbling and vibration

Picked our MG4 up last week and on the drive home we immediately noticed a rumble over around 67mph when we got onto the A14. Feels like its coming from the front left.

I've had unbalanced wheels before and it definitely felt like that. Dealer initially tried to say it may just be a flat spot due to transit, but I can't believe that happens for a car built not more than 3 months ago. But regardless we let it run for a few hundred miles as suggested. It was no better so I took it in today to get the fronts rebalanced, and that helped not one little bit. So, I thought maybe the aero cover was unbalanced, but removing them made no difference...

Will be ongoing to get to bottom of it...

EDIT: After reading more of this thread, we're going to try and get the dealer (Glyn Hopkin) to replace the tyres, or at least help towards the cost to a significant amount.

Rumling or vibration ? As each have different causes.

Vibration could be damaged tyre or wheel bearing or out if balance.

Rumbling - all tyres make road noise and it varies across tyre patterns and types.

Depends what you're describing.

Vibration : through the steering wheel and felt through the floor.
Rumbling : general cabin noise as if the whole care has a vibration in tune with its size.

So what one are you experiencing?

Id expect a defect in a tyre or its balance to be felt through the wheel.

Or is it just you expecting lower road noise, which would normally possibly be masked by engine sounds?

There have been members confirming there tyres have flat spots and needed replacing

In my case MG China would not replace tyres under warranty as they are not covered, very poor from MG China as they were proven to be damaged probably in transit.

However dealer knew the tyres were defective in way of flat spots.
So my dealer through MG UK conributed £400 to replacement tyres on a 'good will' gesture.
Very good of them and I had Cross Climate 2 fitted and just paid the difference on cost of tyres.
Dealer did not charge for balance or fitting.

My car is quiet and smooth now at all speeds, has all seasons on great for this time of the year.
Hope this helps in your claim.

Hi @Hallix73 - I also have the issue and I'm in talks with dealer. It wasn't so noticable for me for the first 3 moinths, partly as car with dealer so often for other work abd also I wasnt doing more than 40mph on my commute. I have been doing much more faster driving lately and it is very noticeable at 70mph. This is despite having the wheels re balanced, twice. I am thinking to use some of the evidence on this forum to help my claim. Just wondering, when did you take delivery of your car, & do you happen to know the production date?

Received car 28th October. Build date was August. However I noticed problem in first few weeks and reported then and dealer got to bottom of it. They even changed wheels with the Demo car which had no vibration to prove it was my tyres at fault.

I have had rumbling and vibration issues since the car was new. 3 of 4 wheels werent balanced properly from the factory, helped a bit having them balanced properly but still not right. I kept trying to convince myself it was in my mind or not that bad but it was really p'ing me off.

Today had 4 new tyres fitted. Falken ZE310. The difference is night and day, no more rumbling, no more vibration.

The dealer fitted them at cost and the original Continentals have gone to the manufacturer for assessment. If they dont find an issue then I am taking them to an independent expert for assessment. Plan then is to recoup money for the tyres from dealer and if they don't play ball I am going to go the small claims court route. It's easy to do.

In the meantime, so chuffed with the difference the new tyres have made. :D

What was the cost of the Falkens?

What was the cost of the Falkens?
My dealer has a tyre business also and their cost price to me incl VAT and fitting/balancing was £298.80 - They wouldn't have been much more if I had gone elsewhere TBH but it's convenient for me. The tyre guys I get on well with and they suggested 1. Conti Eco 6 £95.75 +VAT fitted 2. Goodyear Effi Grip £88.10 +VAT fitted or the Falkens. I looked at reviews On tyrereviews.com and the Falkens came out best of the three and have excellent stopping distance in the wet. The only negative was higher rolling resistance but I'm not bothered in any way by that.

Sorry for being ignorant about tyres but can anyone share pics of what flat spots on tyres look like.

I noticed today that my 4 had some vibration on the steering wheel and as this thread points out ot must be the wheels.

Thanks

You’re not going to see anything externally, if that’s what you’re hoping.

Best go to a tyre specialist to get an opinion, as Bowfer states it may be barely noticeable if at all, they might be able to test them for you.

You should go back to the dealership in reality (if you have a good dealership they may help) but it may not be worth the effort initially. My preference would be to go somewhere that knows what they are talking about and get tyres, balancing and tracking all checked at the same time. If they indicate flat spotting take that evidence to the dealership for resolution.

Some flat spots can resolve themselves after doing many miles in the car and you may be told this...but who knows with these tyres

Thanks for this.

Is there a standard tyre make and model that is fitted from the factory for the MG4 or does it vary by trim and battery range?

I purchased the MG4 125kW model in Turkey. Many people who have bought this vehicle in Turkey are experiencing a vibration issue at speeds over 100 km/h. How did you resolve this issue, if you encountered it as well? Some individuals have mentioned that even after getting new tires and rims, the same problem reoccurs after about 1000 km. Others speculate that the issue might be stemming from the axles. Thank you.

Driving car home from dealer yesterday, I noticed noise and vibration at various speeds. The vibration can be felt all through the car, including the wheel, but there’s no visible steering wheel shake.
I would err towards wheel balance, but the rumbling that goes with the vibration isn’t something I’ve experienced with wheel balance before.
I would describe the noise as similar to when you drive over those horrible concrete sections on motorways.
Blowing up the tyres today (they were all under recommended, thanks dealer…) seems to have moved the vibration/noise over 70mph, but it’s horrible after that - anyone in the car would notice.
I’m wondering if I have a rogue tyre.
I’m getting all-season fitted on Saturday and I’m hoping that will end it, but if it doesn’t I’m lost as to what it could be…but it’s not good in a brand new car….
Hey. Had this is issue. It’s 100% not the tyres.
It’s the undertrays on some MG4s not being fitted and secured properly. Depending on the wind direction, your direction of travel and your speed, it catches them and flaps them causing the vibration.
Just need taking off and refitting. Yet to have them done on mine.

Whilst at the dealers I looked at all the MGs there and 90% had the tyres fitted slightly wrong. On the tyre there is a little red / yellow dot which is supposed to line up with the valve. I,m not completely sure why, but was informed several years ago by a tyre fitter that it was to help with the balancing, the tyre would need less weights added if these points lined up. It both makes sense and does,nt , you choose? I do not know if I was being fed an urban myth or not.
