MG4 Software Update Thread

You have to bear in mind that Tesla are a software company that make cars (shoddily, if my son's is anything to go by) and MG are a car company that probably outsource their software to someone else.
I can't argue with the build quality if it's made in the USA 🤔

But MG are selling cars that are let down by the human interface....I'd like them to make cars that work straight out of the box.....
The car is no longer new to the market, I think it's probably optimised for it's home market and "outsourcing" like GM, Ford and Stelantis do (that I know of) isn't an excuse IMHO
which is why we are all here.

Goth Leo got his software update today. I had phoned the dealer, Dicksons in Inverness, a while back to ask about a series of faults, like the Autohold one, and various others, none of which are unusual for members of the forum, and none of which were serious. All cleared after a locking the car for a while. But I still wanted the issues logged. They said there had been a "recall" for the software update, so Goth Leo was booked in.
Leah at Dickson's service desk was very helpful and efficient, and said they would probably run diagnostics on the errors, which she had noted from the previous phone call.
I did phone in to them as I received two emails during the day from SAIC, one saying that the airbag had triggered an alarm and the other saying the brake system had triggered an alarm, which I took to be part of the update or the diags., but thought I'd better let them know. Intriguing that the car reports in like that, and that SAIC alerts the owners.
But they did run the diags, which I thought was thorough, and as expected, had nothing to report. Leah couldn't say, but we chatted about the possibility of the updates dealing with these occasional spurious messages.
I haven't checked anything fully yet, and asked if there were any differences I would notice. I was told no, and the 2.5 hour trip back home was as expected.
I hope this augurs well for the future, as so far our experience of Dicksons has been pretty positive. We chatted about the long trip in, and Leah even said "Oh, we'll put it on charge once the work is done." They did, but I was nearby when they phoned to collect the car, so not a lot of charge went in. Nice thought, though.

I just wondered. There is a story that a very new update for the SE has the external temperature back again. Has your infotainment version changed at all, or was it just the BMS update, do you know?

She mentioned three systems that had updates, one of which was the BMS. I'd been up since 5.00am to get the car there for 8:30, so wasn't firing on all electrons when she gave me the acronyms!

2.5 hours is harsh…. 😕

My dealer is only 2 miles away luckily

Perfect. Good for you. I think people who like Teslas should buy them.

I was traveling with a Tesla taxi yesterday, just thinking that the quality inside the car looked way cheaper than my MG M4. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around why people would pay twice the amount for these cars which also have worse warranty.

Twice the amount ?

Tesla come with a four year warranty, granted MG is 7 but loads drop off after 3 years.
Tesla are also much cheaper for servicing, at the moment a Tesla doesn't fit for what I need, not a fan of the Y and the M3 is a saloon.

Things may change if they get round to building the smaller Tesla, there is no disputing that at the minute they are miles ahead of most in terms of tech, updating, servicing, charging etc

At last, a voice of sanity! We need more of you, Leni.

Against all advice on this forum I had booked my MG4 SE LR in to Bath MG for a software update as I was on R13 for infotainment and was sorely missing Android Auto nav guidance directions. At the time of booking (2nd August) I was advised that there was a service recall on the car in relation to software - the earliest they could do the work was today. I took the car down at 10am, explained that I was looking to update the Infotainment software to R16 (but now I see that R21 or even R29 might be available), and could they also look at the lane keeping assistance. At 2.45pm I picked up the car, having been told that all its software was fully up to date. I set off with the radio going and Android Auto guiding me home, excited to hear Android Assistant directions at last. Got to the first junction - nothing, not a sausage. So I went into the Vehicle menu and looked at the System page - and infotainment was still on R13!

I'm not sure what the garage have been doing for the 4.5 hours they had the car, and I'm pretty sure they have no idea either. I left them 'talking to technical' as they couldn't understand why the update 'hadn't taken'. They did say that the dealers don't get sent the software updates, they have to download them from a central server - a sensible approach I think - so my suspicion is that they either updated my car with the same software as it was already on, or they somehow didn't follow the update process properly. At least they didn't brick the car. I look forward to hearing from them tomorrow with their latest take on the situation. 🤣
