MG5 Roof rails decorative only

Hi everyone this is the latest response I have had from the DVSA to my complaint to their CEO on March 29th she wrote telling me that a Simon Lewis is the man who is dealing with the matter and the case is in his hands.
I wrote to her to say that after they had there last response from MG I was very disappointed with the reply that Mr Lewis had sent to me/us and felt he had left the Issue just hanging in the air for MG to take as much time as they wanted and I ask for more pressure to be put onto MG for a better response than as they given stating they are looking in to it which they have so called been doing since November 2020 I have also sent a copy of this mail from the DVSA to the consumer association and ask again for their assistance in the matter.

Therefore having read the reply from the CEO and her telling me that the case is still being dealt with by Mr Lewis and is in his hands I have written to him again and also included the last pictures which posted the ones showing the screws holding the rails together and urging him to reassess the MG response and timeline.

Dear Mr Burrows

Thank you for your email of 29 March to our Chief Executive, Loveday Ryder, about the safety issues of a new vehicle. I am replying on her behalf.

I am sorry for any inconvenience or disappointment caused.

As you are aware, Simon Lewis from our vehicle safety branch (VSB) is dealing with your complaint. I have contacted Simon who confirms the investigation with the manufacturer is ongoing. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the work involved this may take some time.

Please be assured a colleague from the VSB will contact you as soon as the matter is concluded.

I would like to thank you for your patience.

Yours sincerely

I will continue to pester them on a regular basis until we get a more positive response.

Dear Mr Burrows

With regards to this issue. I have been in contact with the manufacturer, who have now reported back and demonstrated to me that following DVSA’s enquiries, they have carried out extensive testing to confirm that the MG EV roof bars can indeed carry a capacity of 35kg.

Subject to approval from the Vehicle Certification Agency, the manufacturer has proposed a timetable of actions that includes informing current vehicle owners of the roof bar capacity and providing them with updated vehicle handbooks. All new owners will be informed of the capacity at the time of purchase, and all media will be updated to reflect the 35kg load capacity.

I trust this brings your enquiries to a satisfactory conclusion.

Thanks for the update Les and good work on the chasing up.

Not quite 50kg, but hey at least 35kg is good result.... that’s a couple of bikes or a medium roof box

Much praise and thanks to you Les! Credits to you sir!

Great, so I can now advise others on here as to which roof bars will fit without feeling guilty!
PS: 35kg is dynamic load, static load will be much higher - for those who are interested in using Rooftents like me. :) —— actually roof tents are heavier than 35kg....

Thanks Les for getting this information, would be good to see if anyone on here will be getting letters soon from the dealers.

Hi Alun yes it will I have written back and made a response to the latest DVSA mail, to ask how much time the Vehicle Certification Agency are going to take now so not quite done yet it getting there Im sure they must be sick to the back teeth of me.
Hears what I wrote back to him.

To Simon lewis many thanks for your email today re MG5 roof rails and thank goodness we appear to be getting somewhere with MG my only concern now is the how long it’s going to take for the Vehicles certification Agency to approve this has this is almost the same as MG said on January 15th and was within the same day withdrawn but thank you sir and please keep me updated with anything else on the subject
Yours sincerely

Just the NCAP rating to sort out now. ;):giggle:
That’ll probably be a 3 star as it looks like you need all the gadge these days to get a 5. IMO they distract the driver as I once had a Qashqai with lane departure warning and collision warning I used to turn off as the damn thing used to bing all the time and distract me.

Just weighed my Thule wing bar and it’s 2.3kg. (y)
Alun 2.3 x2 =4.6 still 30kg to go but just read you own post #329 and wait a while
I’ve have said MG have done this before remember but yeh it’s different this time in the respect they say they will be writing to all owners and sending out a changed handbook my postman normally arrives around 11:30 am Monday-Saturday lol

That was each, and I've weighed my roof box and that's around 10kg so have 20Kg for camping stuff (y):) .

Did try and get a test drive today, phoned the dealer up before hand and when I arrived the manager said that he didn't realize the sales dude had a day off and he has the 5 with him. 🤷‍♂️

Each bar or both, was planning on doing mine at the weekend.

Hi all, now I can see some are keen to get the cross rails on the roof with a box or a bike but please pay heed to what I wrote to Alun #339 and wait for that letter to arrive from MG before you do, at lease to ensure your insurance, hopefully it won’t be for much longer.

This is very good news. So is there a particular bar you need to get for a bike or do any universal ones fit? I'd like one for my Trek e bike that weighs a fair bit.

Not sure people lift them up onto the roof though as I can barely reach it to clean nevermore lifting a heavy bike.

Suspect your e-bike will weigh a fair bit ~20Kg, so I'd suggest checking the weight limit of any rack that you intend to use (THULE ProRIde have a 20Kg limit) + need to also consider a) the total system weight - bars, rack + bike, b) how strong you feel in lifting a (heavy) bike up on to the roof / rack....
