When you do go to fit 'for use, slide the front bar as far forward, and the rear as far back along the rails as you can... should then give the recommended separation for your bike rack :). Will also position the clamp across the section where the foot and main bar on - so giving more 'meat' for the clamp to work on.

Lovely thanks, do I have to put the bike in the centre of the car or for ease can I just out it on one side so its easier to lift on and off as I probably can't reach to the centre of the car anyway.

Since the bars are still not officially rated... but in my (humble) opinion mounting the bike rack as close to the side rails as possible would be the best option as it will give a more direct line of force down though its' base and in to the rail/foot of the roof rails.... happens to make the bike easier to load in to the rack too :).

But putting it centrally would spread the load evenly between both rails rather than mainly on one of them.

Surely your would put it in a position that you can safely and comfortably reach unless you want to add the extra weight of a step ladder so you can remove the bike for use then replace the bike for the return journey

From what I have read online it doesn't seem to matter where you place the bike rack or atleast I can't see any that say you should put it in the centre. So will just put it on the drivers side as close as I can so it's easy to mount.
