ZS EV Alternatives

Oh if it was a viable option for me in terms of range & battery capacity (given my annual milage I’d rather have more capacity to maintain battery health) I’d take great delight in telling my lease company & MG to take a running jump.

If I had the money I’d probably get a eMokka to tide me over- there appears to be a lot of new/sub 5k cars in stock- but not in possession of £28k going spare
If you order a new e-Mokka now, you might get it by next april... the wiring loom for the e-Mokka (and the ICE mokka) are made in Ukraine...

Very true. I found the same myself when I test drove the VW ID3 and then the MG ZS, and found the latter had a better interior!
I was VERY disappointed by the ID.3 when I test drove it... for the price of that car I expected so much more, but everything felt cheap and "plasticy" inside, nothing screamed "This is a near 40 grand car" to me at all

The prices for the revised Kia e-niro (or now just Niro) have been released today.

Personally I would say that the Niro is the most comparable to the ZS EV LR in terms of price bracket, size of interior & luggage space & charging speeds.

The SE rough equivalent starts at £34,995.

The Trophy rough equivalent at £37,745.
I'm not impressed by the Niro EV - it doesn't improve in all the right places. I was thinking of a newish used e-Niro, but priced too high.

Same with Hyundai, in the 80s the Hyundai Pony was one of the fastest depreciating cars ever, a 5 or 6 year old example was valued at £20 in the Parkers price guide books.

Haha, i remember a friend i had in the 90's bought a Hyundai from new because if was so cheap.

He had to have all wheelbearings replaced within 20.000 miles.

Offcourse on warranty, but still, who makes a car with bearings that only last 20.000 miles.

I agree.

I have heard more than once from people i know that have been looking at EV's that the ID.3 feels like the cheap plastic and the MG feels like the luxury car, when comparing the 2.

I agree - I really disliked the interior of the ID.3 - hideous! You spend a lot more time seeing the inside of your car, than the outside.

I can kind of see why they would do it though... It certainly makes the ID.4 seem sooooo much better, and in the grand scheme of things, the entry ID.4 is not a horrendous amount more than the ID.3... but it really doesn't do well to attract people into the ID.3 in the first place.

I was charging at Tesco a couple of weeks ago and an ID3 pulled in next to me and connected up. I asked how they were getting on with it. They liked the tech, build and handling, but felt the fit and finish inside was sub standard for VW.

I think they went with BMW i3 styling on the inside... only problem being with that is that the i3 is a very old and outdated EV now, circa gen 1 leaf territory... Which reminds me about another bug bear on the new leaf... the 2022 model has been announced... still with chademo and ccs type 1 charging... no type 2 yet again... what are nissan playing at?!?!

It is absolutely the pricier option, but then I also wouldn't have to make any after market changes since it has tints, head-up display & front sensors. The smaller battery wouldn't bother me as they're known to outperform expectation.

I'm tempted to put down a deposit at launch if I'm going to end up waiting until year end for ZS EV anyway. Initially I had thought MG would deliver before the new Niro EV became a viable option...more fool me.

What to do...? 😫

If there was a couple of grand in it for me & Kia could show that they had a better ordering system, I would go for it instead. I can’t really justify £7k for marginal upside though.

Yeah... it is a jump in £'s. I will wait and see if Costco have any offer on it.

That's bizzare. We get Type 2 AC charging in Australia (I assume that's what you meant, CCS is of course for rapid charging), though also CHAdeMO.

The Leaf is the only BEV available in Australia with a CHAdeMO socket. Though there is still the Mitsubishi PHEV with CHAdeMO, I believe.

It also really boggles my mind, they did not change it over to CCS atleast in Europe.

Even Tesla ditched their own plug in favor of CCS in Europe.

Was actually looking at a Leaf, and the seller was really kean on selling it to me, but then i said "It's a a nice car, but i dont really want a car that has an outdated chargeport".

The sigh from that "poor" nissan dealer, led me to believe, that these Nissan's were getting progressively harder to sell.

Here, by law, if you install a public charger, it MUST have CCS, but ChaDeMo is not mandatory, so most new chargers only support CCS, making it a LOT harder to charge your Nissan.

If Nissan don't soon realise this, and change to CCS, i would imagine, them being "dead" in Europe in 5-10 years.

Who would want an electric car, that has fewer and fewer options to charge for every day that goes on.

I have seen places, that has had their "First gen" chargers replaced with new ones (Old ones were maybe 40Kw chargers).

All of those places has had ChaDeMo chargers, being removed, and replaced with CCS only.

Imagine having a Nissan, getting it charged on a fastcharger, but 6 months later you go to the same place on your journey, just to find that it has been replaced with CCS only.

Pulling this here from the shipping thread.
Heat pump on the Kia is 900 or so extra don't forget.

I went to the Kia Niro launch event a few weeks ago, I was tempted, salesman was absolutely hopeless both at the event and for the following week. I'd have bought one if it was 100% July, but they basically said no chance, it'll be 2023 (true or not who knows)

But I turned up with a metaphorical bag of cash to buy one and they talked me out of it... Go figure

I have a Kia document re e-niro I can share with you later if interested, it's not publically available

Anyway, Ive since joined the ranks of MG ZS EV waiting... Hi all ! :)

Here you go if interested.

the '4' with heatpump is ~£10K more than the ZS Trophy... The Kia is nicer but not 10K nicer IMO (Trophy LR available for £31,000)
Thanks for the upload - really useful! I can take or leave the sunroof so 3 would do, and I'm not bothered about the heat pump, it's not like the ZS has one - I don't feel the weather is inclement enough for it to make a substantial difference to me.

As someone mentioned, there are other intangibles such as Kia having a more substantial dealer network. That's not to say they're without their own issues, but still it counts for something.
It's not just about the price you pay - depreciation is a consideration, and customer service continually get's overlooked; that's where I see people getting fed up with MG...not that the delays they're having aren't being experienced elsewhere.

There's absolutely no denying the MG is great value in comparison, but I can totally understand people deciding to take their money elsewhere.

You're welcome, hope it helps.

To be honest based on my interaction with Kia, wanting to buy one of the e-Niro's - they were horrific and put me off, so not convinced on customer service.

Their launch event (I went to the first one in the country) was laughable, didn't have the pricing available (yet Kia released it about noon the same day and it pinged up on my phone) - the sales guy was hopeless, stated he didn't have any information on contributions or finance deals (with the attachment I posted in the email, stating both options)

Started the evening with a 'take my money' attitude and a few days later I'd completely given up trying... followed by ordering the MG ZS lol
