Noise from car in the wee hours of the morning

Is this a grrrr and then a loud metallic clunk sound?

    Which charging cable to buy?

It’s hardly a DC desert out there anymore though, yes, you might need to suck up the disgusting prices from a manky BP Polar charger or a random Podpoint DC. However, I think most would be hard pushed in the bulk of England to fluff up so bad in 2025 and run out of charge if they pay attention...

    Which charging cable to buy?

I’d rather keep a 3pin in car for an emergency than a type 2. Plan better and unless you live in the middle of nowhere with an unexpected detour you shouldn’t get in to the issue you describe.

    Which charging cable to buy?

Unless you’ve got some decent priced charging posts close by it’ll likely make more sense just to rapid charge. If you have Tesla chargers close they are cheapest, followed by Arnold Clark via Octopus Electroverse.

    %, miles or both?

Same as Clive said you get used to knowing what miles per kWh mean for real world scenarios pretty quickly. Although, I suppose it depends on what situation you’re in, if you’re down to 20% you need to be actively reviewing your options, by 10% and you want to be ensuring you're close to a...

    Which charging cable to buy?

The first question is do you actually need one? The only time I used mine was when Podpointa were free (many years ago).

Slightly pathetic data limitation - 1GB, MG4 Trophy

My data occasionally runs out towards end of the month by using just the map features. Never used hotspot or similar, but do quite a few miles per month. When it’s run out I’ve been doing c.2500 miles in a month.

It doesn’t make a difference to credit file, however could make the current lender not want to lend to you again though.

Keyless start? Anyone got it working?

Just checked on my car (with window open to test internal handles). It's supposedly on software version R67: Physical Key - Deadlocked enabled Bluetooth Key - Deadlock not enabled Remote Key - Deadlock not enabled I don't think the deadbolt functionality will affect insurance as i can't see a...

Keyless start? Anyone got it working?

It’ll be the deadlocks, usually a remote lock doesn’t activate them to prevent you locking people in the car unintentionally.

    I hate my MG4

To be honest your opinion isn’t worth anything as you’re more interested in insulting than fixing, or constructive feedback. I don’t like my MG4 that much, and as a result will probably take a £2000 hit next year to end my lease early. Yet, the car isn’t a total shambles, and you’re doing...

    Dilemma MG4 needs swapping

If it’s in negative equity why not just give it back when the PCP is up? You can voluntarily terminate a PCP agreement when half the balance is paid up which dependent on how you structured the finance could be around now. Are you saying you can’t afford car and that’s why you are wanting to...

Boot Door / Tailgate Interior Plastic Trim Removal

Well i've been hunting this bloomin' rattle for months (on and off). It's been really annoying. I've had lots of trim out, adjusted the boot door a few times and still there. In the end I've I located it, and can you guess what it was........................ The number plate  Turns...

    I hate my MG4

Oh yeah, i agree, the customer experience is terrible when it comes to aftersales. Sure, make it cheap, get it out the door half baked, but MG really needed to spend a little wad on getting the updates easily available to all. This issue will bite MG in the bum, as negative sentiment gets...

    I hate my MG4

I don't think the car is cheap and nasty, it's about the quality you'd expect for what is cost from a physical point of view. What is absolutely it's failing (to me, and why i don't like it) is its software, it's terrible and causes almost all the issues. The software is likely the result of...

    I hate my MG4

Being slightly nostalgic, and also sarcastic he could take his car back in time to the quality analysis centre 😜. Incidentally this is one of the last ever MGRover press photos from April 2005, so fellow geeks might enjoy.

    I hate my MG4

Really, i didn't know that , i must have been in a bubble since 2005, Najingwho? The point was the UK designed ZR (R25) wasn't any better than this car, in-fact it was much worse. Here’s a special press photo to cheer everyone up (the only modern Rover/MG I never had). I believe this...
  18. G

    I hate my MG4

Hmmm, i'm not a massive fan of the MG4 (which is a shame as i was wanting an Xpower since they first came out and have a lot of affection with UK Rover/MG's) however what's has hating EV's got to do with the MG4? Clearly the MG4 is much better car than the MG ZR in every way (which was an ICE...

    Miles/kWh

I’m not sure what you’re asking here, of course it starts off low in winter, you’re smashing 5-7kW through the heater to warm the car plus the energy in the motor. As the car warms its interior up, the energy to move the car is the main contributor so the miles per kWh then increase.
  21. G

Is my heating power consumption correct?

I think the energy screen is useless as yesterday and today it’s just showing 1kWh for both heating and drive on mine, even after 10 miles (which is clearly erroneous)

SE SR charging issues leaving me in a pickle

I’d be telling them, cool, so when I hand the car back it’ll be nice and easy fix for you before you sell the car on, as like I’ve told you I am refusing the car as it’s not fit for purpose in its current state. Personally, I’d go in all guns blazing and kick off, they are treating you like a mug.
  23. G

Is my heating power consumption correct?

It still equates to 12.5% of the cars power utilisation for your trip being used to simply heat a small cabin.

Dunno, all i know is that some of their residents drive me mad :p
  25. G

MG4, Zappi and Octopus Intelligent Go

Because the billing of said charge will be done on time not energy delivered. Soon as you tick over 6 hours of charging (even if it's a 0.12kw) will lead to all energy after this time being charged at full price.

    Boot wouldn't lock ...... until......

He's not bothered as his car (and all the other MG's he sells are over 2m away from the road :D

MG4, Zappi and Octopus Intelligent Go

First world problem I know however this change will likely result in my car taking a beating by sitting at 100% much more often. At present i try and keep it 80% or below, knowing I can charge outside of peak time. However, going forward I will likely have to charge up to 100% and just leave it...

MG4 2023 driver seat material degradation cracks

Always worth arguing, however it's 50/50 they will accept this issue. When the company i used to work for tried to claim on their warranty for their work chairs having issues with padding they were told the users were likely "too heavy" and that their maximum weight limit was 18 stone. They...

SE SR charging issues leaving me in a pickle

Not at all, dump this lemon before it screws you over.
  31. G

MG4 2023 driver seat material degradation cracks

Not quite as it's irrelevant what the warranty says as most go by the following guidelines and the collector would likely class the damage as a tear.
  32. G

MG4 2023 driver seat material degradation cracks

It's terrible when this happens and I think manufacturers should give a better warranty. However (not sticking up for MG here) I had this with my first ever brand new car (a BMW 320D M Sport). I babied this thing, i loved it, i was light weight and never exerted any force on the side bolsters...

The elephant in the room are Ohme's chargers where EDIT - Octopus confirmed it is Ohme can lower the charging current and cause the charge to be stretched out over the requested 6 hours, even though the punter asked for a level of charge that should have been deliverable in the said 6 hours...

Is my heating power consumption correct?

There's no point heating the batteries at all in the UK if that's what you are asking. Well, that is unless you are planning on taking the car straight out on to the race track from your drive, or live next to a motorway and want to gun it to 70mph. If you mean internal heating of cabin, then...
  36. G

MG4, Zappi and Octopus Intelligent Go

I don't know why Octopus don't just set a wholesale threshold price in the background (they don't need to tell us) to simply block out problematic intervals. To further mitigate their risk (and help the grid) they could use previous customer charge data to create a "user" score which could be...
  37. G

MG4 2023 driver seat material degradation cracks

I agree on that, the sun's not going to be bending around causing this issue in the UK. It's much more likely that people are rubbing over the bolster when getting in and out and squishing it. The heavier someone is (or less flexible) the more likely they are to compress the material and...
  38. G

MG4, Zappi and Octopus Intelligent Go

Someone on SpeakEV has asked Octopus what happens in this scenario, as it's a valid concern. If the customer has requested 6 hours @ 7Kw then you'd expect c.42kWh to be delivered. If they drop the charge to 16A for an hour of that charge then you'd only be getting 38.5kWh so be charged full...

MG4, Zappi and Octopus Intelligent Go

Octopus used to sell it themselves for both Go and Intelligent Go. It’s the same unit as a normal Ohme 7Kw charger, but is fully restricted so you can’t chop plug off and change to full power...
  40. G

MG4, Zappi and Octopus Intelligent Go

Looks like I was wrong here too. There’s an option in the Octopus app under Devices which appears to let you turn smart charge on and off. Not tried it yet, but will.
  41. G

MG4, Zappi and Octopus Intelligent Go

Not enough for me with my Ohme 3 pin purchased through Octopus so looks like I’ll need to buy a new charger. Thankfully, the Ohme I purchased has more than paid for itself.
  42. G

MG4, Zappi and Octopus Intelligent Go

Oh dear, come the end of January 2026 then what I’ve said above will no longer be the case 🙁. Looks like they’ll implement the option to restrict to 6 hours in their app to support this change. https://octopus.energy/blog/intelligent-octopus-go-charge-limit/

Window tint removal - Phase 1

Backing in to small spaces in the dark is where I find it most frustrating too.
  44. G

MG4, Zappi and Octopus Intelligent Go

I received my bill yesterday and always use well over 6 hours every time I plugin (unavoidable with the max speed of my Ohme being 2.25Kw real world). It’s always low rate for me when Octopus manage the charge.
  45. G

Window tint removal - Phase 1

Not sure what phase 1 means, so unsure if mines one, however I find the tints far too dark on both rear windows and back window and does have a negative effect on visibility
  46. G

MG4, Zappi and Octopus Intelligent Go

It’s not charged at full rate, whatever they say. It’ll be their AI giving rubbish. I’m running a 2.4Kw Ohme and it’s always low rate.
  47. G

MG4, Zappi and Octopus Intelligent Go

My comments were solely in relation to people (including you) moaning that IOG will cause smaller intervals to be utilised inside and outside of the low rate period, and how that could potentially cause wear and tear. I don't care how you, or others use the tariff specifically. I was simply...
  48. G

MG4, Zappi and Octopus Intelligent Go

Who cares about T&C's, totally irrelevant to the point i was making. It was you who referenced the effect on batteries and inverters. If you want to stop the "wear and tear" your only option is to move tariffs. If you want to enjoy the benefits of IOG then you have to accept their way of...
  49. G

MG4, Zappi and Octopus Intelligent Go

This tariff was created to help the ESO balance the grid and frequency, to run alongside Go. You get more hours in payback for you agreeing to having movable intervals. The reason Octopus can afford to give you more hours is because they are able to chop and change power demand en-masse quickly...
  50. G

MG4, Zappi and Octopus Intelligent Go

You would have to move to Go in that case as the purpose of Intelligent is to help Octopus balance the grid (hence why you getting a better deal than Go).

OBDii scanner recommendations for MG4 EV

As an FYI - I purchased the Vgate iCar Pro Bluetooth model Amazon which worked perfectly on my Ioniq and was very quick at reading all the data many times per second, working perfectly. I am unsure if it's the scanner dongle, the app (car scanner iOS) or just the MG just having a poor...
  52. G

MG4, Zappi and Octopus Intelligent Go

The "annoying" way IOG works is why it's cheaper though for the end user. If they gave people pre-planned slots that don't move would negate the reason why IOG is a product.
  53. G

MG4, Zappi and Octopus Intelligent Go

I agree, it would make much more sense if they defaulted it to a lower charge (say 25%) and then tell customers (via push message) they have to intervene to up figure this when they need charging by a higher figure (if they want to reduce incorrect schedules). I set mine at 50%, if i need more...
