Who else suffers from the tiny 1GB of data on the MG4 Trophy?

I bought that version car on the basis this higher spec has live traffic and car data (plus the other hardware bits). The car has been to a garage to "fix" the lack of data and no traffic or weather etc etc. Recently I started to piece together that around the 20-28th of the month the traffic, weather and personal log-in (data) often stopped working, BUT, on the 1st it began to work! Amazing double glazing.

I then contacted MG and they advise the car is limited to 1GB of data a month and you cannot get more, either paid or free. This is against the advertising of this Trophy version that makes no reference to data is severely restricted.

I don't use Amazon music, just have on occasionally the (cars inbuilt) Google traffic map and the constant weather app.

Am I one of the few drivers where my data stops working 3/4 way through the month!? I did not pay an extra £3k to have that nonsense happen. I would like to create an action group if many others are in the same position.

I will be advising What Car and the ASA.

Plus recently discovered the boot has been waterlogged ! In the summer was told the rear seatbelt is wet. Now I know why!

Originally the limit was much higher, or even unlimited, but as usual some people took the piss and downloaded huge amounts of data. So MG put the current restriction in place, which as you say doesn't even seem to cover the cars own usage.

I'm showing my age now. I used to be in IT (when I worked). I recall I was tasked with spec'ing some new PCs for the office. When it came to choice of hard drive size, the choice was 40 MB or 80 MB (of course I chose the 80 MB) And do you know what ? the devices worked just fine. Mind you not so much graphical as text, but that was then ......

To be honest 1GB seems plenty to me, never had an issue. I can't think of anything that would use a lot of data in the car.

As a comparison I have just checked my phone and last month I used 2.5GB of mobile data, that's Spotify, Google maps, Whatsapp. A lot of the Spotify and maps would be while I was in the car.

Interesting you don't run out. I did a long (around 15 hrs drive in Nov) above my normal day-to-day driving and the car ran out of data around the 24th Nov.

I have written to the ASA tonight to show the brochures and website is giving incorrect info suggesting in my normal full use (27 days a month average driving) the vehicle will have no data for the advertised brochure pictures to exist.

You confuse matters though Kemp1 referring to phone and whilst in car. I am purely using the car's weather and google maps. (the iSmart for battery on/off and App always work even when the "data" is exhausted).

Keep to the topic! LOL Not memory lane 😉

The car hasn't got google maps, it's a system with the map data stored in the car, so no data would be used. Weather would use a tiny amount of data as would traffic data. So I can't see where 1GB would go.

I included my phone just as a comparison of data use.

Never had an issue and my car is 10 months old. Maps & radio are all through wireless phone android, works a treat.

Nope, not ever run out of data - incuding holidays where the milage and time driving is much higher than normal. As has been said, the maps are stored locally - they are not Google - so there shouldn't be a high data load there. Are you using the car hotspot at all? It's difficult to see where it's going based on "normal" useage

My data occasionally runs out towards end of the month by using just the map features. Never used hotspot or similar, but do quite a few miles per month. When it’s run out I’ve been doing c.2500 miles in a month.

I have never run out of data in mine in 3 years. I do not use the hotspot in the car or the built-in maps.

Yes, they could offer more data, but if it were a European maker, you'd probably be looking at £19.99/month to subscribe as an optional extra.

It would actually make more sense to connect the car to your phone's data plan, like some makers do (Renault?).

I have the same use case as you and since 2024 summer (when MG modified data limit), I run out of data some months. What I noticed: every time I start the car, weather refreshes the data, and does the same every hour. Live traffic is updated when I use the embedded GPS.
So I think the months when I most use the car GPS, or have a lot of short rides, all drain the data.

When it arrives and I need GPS traffic, I share my phone connection.

I miss the day I could share data from the Car to connect my phone, laptop and tablet without any limit...
