Any better overnight tariffs?

I reckon the best giveaway would be to properly insulate properties. It's about the most efficient use of govt money but take-up is usually quite low.

Need to cut bills & usage not shore them up! :)
The trouble is that UK housing stock is typical not of a quality that can be effectively insulated.

Passivhaus is hard to retrofit but we can do much than we do, at relatively little cost - just a few draught excluders and more insulation and lagging would be a start. Block up unused chimneys and spaces between floorboards etc. Educate people about efficient use of energy.

All better than just throwing public money at the energy companies.

I really like what you’re saying, but the UK housing stock on the whole is so badly built it would be unachievable for most from a cost and practical view point.

Passivhaus Hmmmmm. I wonder if a major part of energy (and health) issues is trying to deal with expectations. House I grew up in had only one central open fire, if we were cold we put on more clothes. Bedrooms had ice on the inside of windows in winter, but we were warm and snug in bed, I honestly cannot remember being that bothered about cold.
House had no insulation, all windows and doors were draughty, which still did not stop my mum opening the windown in mid winter to get some "fresh air"(double glazing did not exist), but mouldy walls prevalent in some modern houses badly designed for saving heat and not healthy living just never really existed.
Recently had a conversation about this with my mates all similar in age, we found that we all had one thing in common. Despite living in well inuslated modern houses, we leave the bedroom windows open at night for "fresh air"
I have built a passivhaus, it was ok...ish, you need mechanical heat recovery to ensure proper air changes, and I had solar panels etc.
I do like passivhaus, as long as it means the house doesnt go heading off down the street;)

Yes I can remember all of that from the old days @Robf.

That's one reason why I get a bit vexed at some of the vox pop things where they interview someone in a one bed flat on the "news" who say they can't get their electric bill below £2500 or whatever, and the govt really ought to stump up more.. This is where a bit of education might help (only might though). If only they'd listen...

Hello everyone.

I have a new MG4 and will be installing an electric storage battery for our solar panels and overnight cheap electricity.

Can anyone recommend their electricity provider that offers a better overnight tariff than Scottish Power?
Night rate: 7 hours @ £0.12
Day rate: £0.47 (seems very high to me)

Thanks for any replies.
Neil
12p for 7hrs with 20kw libbi and an EV sounds good to me that plus solar PV should cover most of the peak I would hope

Looks like EDF is back - EV Tariff - Energy for Your Electric Car and Home for Less, alas at 8p / unit off peak (35hrs / week), which is to be expected given the competition (or lack of) - of course its only any good if you are a pretty heavy user, and have the facilities to cover the peak rate (as its 54p / unit) e.g. batteries and or solar. Nevertheless good to see all the big 6 (almost) now again providing off-peak tariffs to new customers.

the peak rate is horrendous. EdF running scared of the solar and battery brigade

Completly agree - with such a horrendous day rate, people will start to take fire risks, and do washing / dishwasher overnight & alongside EV charging & heat pumps & hot water heating - its not going to end well.

I think to get the EV night rate you need a charging point installed and for that a load survey to ensure this doesn’t happen ensuring circuit protection in place. The EV charging point should take what’s left depending on the circuit loading of 100amps.

Tens of thousands of people are already doing things like this overnight. Cheaper night time electricity is nothing new.

I've done it myself - but it doesn't make me sleep well! wasn't Grenfell caused by a simple household fridge (or similar?)

I find that the 13A fuse gets warm (certainly if I'm granny charging away from home)

Yes it may have been (though I had a recollection of a balcony BBQ, but I think I'm wrong) but Grenfell was extraordinary and unprecedented (and I hope never to be repeated) for all kinds of reasons, none of which were really to do with the cause of the fire.

my Intelligent Octopus tariff is now 10p 11.30pm - 05.30am and 27p outside that. 🙂

Nice to see it going down for a change
Over night had just went down to 7.5p it's went back up but that's a much better day rate

Just checked I'm still 7.5p and 38p

Yes - mine was 7.5 and 38p. Now 10 and 27p. The reduction in day rate is helpful, but as you say the night rate has increased.
