MG4 SE LR
Hi
I use a granny charger to charge my MG4 SE Long Range and this morning it was making a clicking noise like a fast metronome and was not charging. I swapped the extension lead but no luck. I then went to a nearby 50kW charger but no luck and then the 22kW charger next to it. It made the same clicking noise although not so fast. Essentially it is trying to charge but can’t. I contacted the AA and their EV help phoned back straight away saying that they had a few calls today like this. He suggested I reboot the console by holding the Home button down for 15 seconds until the centre console reboots, then exiting the car and locking it. Waiting at least 2 minutes and then re-entering and trying to charge again. Checking that the scheduled charging wasn’t on. I did this and tried the granny charger again, still no luck. He suggested trying at a DC charger so went through the ritual again and still no luck. His advice was that it therefore needed to go to an MG dealer to be sorted out. Anyone else has this problem and have any advice? Thanks!

That's possible. First, I'd try carefully cleaning the pins on the charge port socket. You may have gotten road salt in there somehow, or rain/snow for example. If you use an oil based cleaner, remove the oil before attempting to use it (e.g. with a cotton bud or the like). I'd start with methylated spirits or isopropyl alcohol if you have it handy. Contact cleaner would be best, but it's expensive and less likely to be on your garage shelf.

Perhaps use a hair drier or similar to blast out any dust or similar, and the last residues of oil, if any.

After all that, sadly it is likely needing dealer attention.

Sorry to hear that you're having this trouble.

My car did a weird no charge thing at a fast charger. I closed all windows lock the doors and it started to charge. I did this twice hopefully your problem is simple.

I have a similar issue reported elsewhere where my granny charger fails with an overcurrent fault. I could charge by reducing the charge rate on the info charging screen. Trying at a podpoint charger today to see if it is a granny or car problem.

Your better off buying some electrical contact cleaner, that's what I am going to get to clean my charging plugs

Got home this morning and tested the granny charger again. Plugged in unpowered and wiggled the plug then connected the power. Hey Presto, car started charging at normal power. Note, wriggled it yesterday but that was with power on. Will monitor.

No luck with the cleaning was clean according to the cotton buds. Still won’t charge at any charger. Will speak to the local MG garage on Monday.

Sounds like you have a phase 1 car, a few owners having replacement CCU’s but currently no stock until mid Feb.

Good luck

There is the disconnect 12v battery option to reset the electronics. Also, if you have not already done so, reduce the ac charge current to minimum for the granny charger.

We had our phase 1 SE LR in at dealer for updates to help solve charging issues last week.

Had generally always behaved across mix of Granny, home ac and rapid dc charging for most of its 10 months since new.

Started getting various problems that became more frequent just after the very cold weather set in at the beginning of Jan e.g.
  • car failing to start charging on schedule,
  • failed charges overnight (some due to out of range current warnings after 20 mins or so where charger then locked out for safety) these actually lessened the more we reduced the charging amp draw allowed via the charger itself though at the time,
  • charging port/lights slow to wake up, (would often fade in with a hesitant flickering) and then also charging port lights failing to illuminate at all (I did manage to reset them via the fuse pull method at the time to get them active again).

Service report shows that they updated various out of date modules to include BMS / BCH / CCU /EVOC / GW / IMCU

Anyway, so far so good as we've had it back on the ac charger a number of times since and all working as expected again....for now.

They didn't update anything else like the infotainment firmware's though so will be back for that come 1st service time in a few weeks.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but ISTR reading somewhere that plugging the car in first then the power source is the correct way with the granny whereas it's the other way round with 7kW AC chargers.

Mine doesn't seem to care. I usually remember to switch the granny lead off on the wall socket when unplugging, and when plugging it in again I plug in first then switch the wall socket on, but if I've forgotten to switch it off and plug the car in while it's live it still starts to charge.

I had a problem with overcurrent trip on my granny. Previously I put power to the granny (to see the status lights) then plugged in. But after my problem I've taken to plugging in first and then switching on the mains. I am still monitoring the issue.

Question: Whenever I turn on the car the middle section of the default main screen on my MG4 always displays "Charging - Decharging" and below "please plug in the charge connector" then the % charge (number and bar graph) and then two control buttons "Start" and "Lock." - I can't find any discussion about these buttons in the user manual. What do they do, and when are they supposed to be used? More generally, what is the proper sequence of owner actions for connecting and charging the car, and for terminating charging and disconnecting? I have a lot of trouble and often find necessary to use the emergency lanyard in the boot to get the recharge sockets door to open, and afterward to disconnect the plugs. The user manual is inadequate on this. Advice from other users (and experts) would be appreciated!
