MG4 Software Update Thread

I'm at my local MG dealer now - apparently the 'campaigns' are released by chassis number rather than model so while some identical cars have had updates others won't. They understand my concerns but they won't risk updating my car unless MG release the update and tell them to do it. They've had cars in for 5 months before because they've run an update and it's bricked the system. MG have a massive backlog of bricked systems due to lack of staff. They said they'd rather have the car working with some faults than not working at all.
This, if true, explains a lot. If they can't get past this, MG will be seriously disadvantaged in the market.

This would indicate a build control system that's out of control. I'd already thought that this was the case with the different software variants that seem to be in the wild across the various markets (and that's just the infotainment software that we know about).

Yes, it does indicate that.

It took VW 2 years to get their software issues mostly sorted with the ID3. MG have had 18 months and it isn't looking good.

For me, issues like this would be the difference between sticking with the brand or leaving when we next change our car.

And how old is the first ZS? 4 years?

My car had to go into the dealer's workshop on Monday to have the front passenger door window motor reset as it had locked itself (thankfully with the window up), and I was told that the car would have a software update at the same time. When I picked it up later that day, again the receptionist said the software had been updated and the window motor reset. However, on the info screen the software versions are R33 and E32, which I think are the same as I had before, so I am not understanding what update the car has received.

However, very oddly, the car does 'feel' slightly different, and the LKA is no longer trying to violently steer me off the road in places it would beforehand. Now all I seem to get is a slight nudge of the wheel, if or when I get close to the centre line! I have driven about 50m miles since getting it back, and had just one nudge, on lanes and roads which previously I would have been hanging on for dear life if the LKA had been left switched on. I am going to email the workshop to ask what software was updated because at the moment I am somewhat bemused (but pleased the LKA seems to be behaving).

Update on posting #2608 above,

I am falling in love with Mungo all over again. Since the software update I have purposely driven down several lanes that previously the LKA would always have attempted to drive me into the Cornish hedges, but now absolutely no hint of any adverse input from the car.....fantastic!

It is a real shame the car was brought to market with so many software issues, but at least it seems that MG is gradually rolling out updates that cure some of the faults.

Another thing I have noticed is the previous laggy nature of the touch screen is now much improved, instead of having to hit an onscreen button two or three times for the required action to occur, now it is is (usually) just a single press.

My SE was updated to R33 to fix the missing outside temperature and one unexpected bonus is the rear parking sensors now display the distance to the object on the screen in centimetres.

I’m really liking this feature as I find that the car always looks much closer to things out the back than it really is so didn’t trust the sensors even though they were correct.

I use the sensors (on R13) to gauge my position in the garage to give me just enough space to walk behind the car to plug in the charging cable, so I know to an inch not just what each colour band represents, but also the increasing speed of the warning beep!

I was in my MG dealer on Friday to order a new MG4 Trophy extended range. After having placed the order, i thought I'd go to the maintenance department and ask if my current Trophy Long Range could have the latest software (I'm on R40 and asked if I could have R46 installed as i am experiencing Bluetooth issues).

They checked my car on their system and said it wasn't due any software update as there were no 'recalls' added to my car. I said that I know for a fact there is a newer software version available and they insisted there wasn't and things started to escalate ever so slightly so I decided to stop trying to push the argument (for now).

They said they could book the car in to check any issues but that they may have to keep it for a while as MG were so slow in helping diagnose issues. It's booked in but I may cancel this cos I don't want to be without the vehicle if they are going to keep it for weeks.

The crux of this is that I felt like they were either fobbing me off by saying there is no new software (when clearly R46 is available) or that they are not aware themselves of the state of things with this car. Both scenarios are pretty poor.

MG haven't made R46 available on general release - customers seem to get it if they have bluetooth issues or similar that need attention. So the dealer is right that the latest on general release is R40.

I don't know why MG have done this.

There is apparently an R58 coming.

I got the same response from my dealer (I'm on R33 , Trophy by the way) anyway I have decided not to pursue the R46 update any further as apparently it doesn't definitely cure Bluetooth unpairing and it can bring other issues such as left star button not being able to be programmed. So decided to stick with R33 , and on the occasions when the Bluetooth does unpair I ignore the message popup , press home until it restarts and hey presto Bluetooth is restored.

Think I'll do the same - if i use android auto it seems to be 90% ok with using the phone or music so will probably cancel my booking.

Why can't they just tell us the situation rather than force customers into finding out for themselves on random 'unofficial' forums, YouTube etc.? I'd much rather be told the honest truth by the dealer...
