EV opposition in the media is ramping up

The Spectator contributes with ill-informed speculation on the effects EVs will have on the power grid.

Oh no that’s disastrous. I really wanted to make my porridge this morning (microwave) then set off somewhere with the car (wall charger) to collect more oatmeal but if the street transformer explodes I’ll need to eat corn flakes and I’ve really not thought this through properly. I’m doomed.

Fear not Archev, Ray Mears and Ed Stafford have educational videos for the preparation of porridge and other foodstuffs using a few sticks in your back garden. Tescos, Ocado, and others provide delivery services for the essentials , so all is not lost. In these uncertain times you will always need a plan B in your back pocket!:):)

No I’ve double checked - the delivery vans are all oil burners around here, and there’s no back pocket in my kilt.

Of course, all the people who work at the National Grid, with all their qualifications and years of experience, never thought about how electric cars would impact the electricity network. How short sighted. :)

Well, you are going to be fun on the Christmas "do".
C'mon, Archev, get em in, it's your round.
You've got no poc..... what!
What do you mean, its "cultural"?
What's that thing dangling down in front and between your legs then?
Well, good luck with the barmaid showing her that , mines a heavy! :cautious::cautious:

"So's mine ;)", said @Archev

😂

Honestly, they're out soliciting for disaffected EV drivers now.

Nearly all the replies are from EV drivers pointing out that they're very happy with their cars.

This is good, though.

Maybe everyone on here who is on social media, should bombard her with positive stories to discourage her and maybe suggest she stops resisting the tide and write a positive article.

If you look at the replies to the tweet, that's more or less what happened.

Here's the actual article she wrote. It can be read without the paywall by using "view source".

Absolute litany of FUD.

Perhaps the interesting bit is that he had his ipace in 2019 and then went to petrol in 22 before switching to diesel...

It is false. EVs have far less brake wear and tyres last just as long. The weight penalty for EVs has largely disappeared for medium to large vehicles and as you say cars got a lot heavier before EVs appeared anyway. Then there is nonsense about EVs not lasting as long as ICE cars, when the reverse will be true.

If you check out Electric Classic Cars you'll see they can convert any ICE car to electric while keeping at or below the original ICE weight and improving the weight distribution.

Most of these reports do not factor in the fossil fuel industry environmental impact. They just use tailpipe emissions as if the fuel simply appears at the pumps.

A glance at the comments on the video shows you the effect of this crap - hundreds of people saying the EVs don't work, aren't the answer are being forced upon us etc...etc... fud fud fud.
My first set of tyres lasted more than 40k miles, and when I changed them in readiness for winter the tyre guy really didnt want to as there was still a couple of mm left.

Hmmm... it isn't journalism if you decide what the story is and then look for sources to confirm it. That's activism.

A proper journalist would ask even-handed questions and follow the feedback and write that.

But then few editors would want a boring story about how happy EV owners are with their cars!

It's propaganda is what it is

The question could be: are there any people who bought an EV who switched back to ICE, because unlike others in the same set of circumstances, they dont have the mental capacity to be capable of being able to use it ie user error. That would cover most, but not all, of the switch back to IC.

I think there are also some who genuinely switched back because:
  • Their range expectations were misled/misinformed.
  • They had a lemon and a really bad experience.
  • Because of their circumstances public charging is too expensive.

Hence the wording I used being: 'most, but not all'. The not all element covering those you listed.

I've been pondering a related question, 'Would you advise some one to switch from an ICE to an EV?`
After all:
EVs are comparatively expensive to buy and, if you can't charge at home, to run
Depreciation may be higher
' Range anxiety' can be a problem, but getting less.
Possibly more complex to operate but probably that's true of a modern ICE.

BUT EVs are
More environmentally beneficial
No ICE to go wrong
Cheaper to run if charging at home
Quieter
Better at accelerating

What have missed?
