Tesla Supercharger Issue MG5 LR

I have just got off the phone to MG customer assistance and was told that the pre facelift will not get a free update as it is classed as an optional upgrade and the £1000.00 plus labour is correct, only the facelift version gets it free as an update.

And I thought my quote of £498 was bad enough! (See post 565)

Clearly MG are not bothered about retaining their existing customers in the future. I for one will never buy another MG if this farce is not resolved.

I've just had my second service with Richmond MG Southampton. All fine, petrol HS as courtesy car,
(It took me an age to get used to changing gears and having a clutch )

No charging update. It was explained to mee that they will only carry out software updates if it's on the campaign list and there was nothing showing as needed on my pre-fl 5LR. we had an amicable discussion about it, (this thread mentioned... 'you haven't to believe everything on forums' was posited.

Anyway, I asked if they had any objections to me contacting MG technical and they didn't, so I'll compose an email and send it over the weekend and feedback any reply I get.

I do agree with Green Salop Man in the sentiment that I wouldn't have another MG if they can't sort issues out on a car that hasn't had it's first MOT yet.

Having been looking at the thread prior to my MG5 LR pre-FL going in for its service yesterday I was excited to see that there is a fix available for the Tesla supercharger issue. I arrived at Macklin Motors MG just outside Edinburgh and spoke to the service department about the update resulting in a blank look. I was then told there was no recall updates and I said about the forum and information provided by Les and other that the update was available free of charge and this had been confirmed by MG. I got told by the service manager said there was an update coming that hadn't been released yet and they're not sure how other people have received it - which clearly isn't true!

I tried my luck asking one of the technicians walking about the dealership and he went away and came back with the same answer unfortunately. I think my next step is to send MG an email explaining what I've been told, but was wondering if anyone up in Central Belt Scotland has had any luck with any dealers?

@ElectricBenSolar if you have any luck anywhere please let me know and I'll keep you updated on my progress.

@Les burrows and others involved thanks for the progress on this!

UPDATE
Thought I would try Arnold Clark MG Edinburgh to ask the question. Just phoned and they said there was an update available for my car and it would be free of charge, which seems promising. When I asked if they could confirm details of the update like the version or what it would update so I could check it against what's been posted on the thread they said they didn't have any and "don't believe everything on the forums", which I was thought was ironic! Anyway I'll update after 23rd May when it's booked in and hopefully will be able to use the Tesla chargers.

Thanks,
Andrew
Might have to try calling about the dealers, perhaps I’m expecting too much from Linwood Arnold Clark, good luck and fingers crossed!

I’ve just been told today that my pre face lift 5 long range would need a new EVCC fitted then the update all of which including fitting and VAT would cost just under £800.

Makes me wonder if there are multiple revisions of the EVCC unit for the PFL, and it depends on which one you have as to if you can have a compatible software update.

I rather agree!

Mine is a 22 plate and the Tesla Update has, apparently, been done, easily and at no cost to me. I say "apparently" because there are no Tesla Superchargers anywhere near where live so I cannot verify the update.

@Archev , what plate is yours? If it is a 21 this could give credence to the suggestion from @dragon2611.

My car is a 71 plate.

Mine is a 22 plate which the MG Arnold Clark in Edinburgh have said there's an update available at no cost to me. Was it them who you spoke to as well @Archev? Have you tried any other dealers out of interest?
Hi - no I was speaking to the receptionist at Frasers at Falkirk and he checked with the service people in the workshop. I might visit or try phoning another dealer.

This is probably linked to some of the late PFL having the same architecture as the FL such as 11 kW charging via Type 2. So it likely the late PFL have some components that are different to the early cars.

Are you sure about this?

I didn't think any of the pre-facelift cars had the 11 kW charging, i.e., 3 phase. My understanding is that that feature came first to early facelift models.

I read it on here a few times. Could be False News.

I have quite a "late" pre-facelift (registered March 22) and it certainly does not have 3-phase charging.

Well as far as I know no PFL 5s had the 11kW capability, but I don’t think that as anything to do with it as several PFL have had the updates and work.
My FL trophy model does have it and it's quite easy to check by looking at the charging socket you will see only 3 live pins on 6.6kW single phase are metal but if you have the 3 phase 11kW then 5 are metal. I believe all European vehicles have 3 phase but not all UK ones have, of course to use that you will need a 3 phase charging cable as well.

I spoke to the Service Manager on 18th March about this, car booked in for 11th June. They said update wasn’t specified to resolve Tesla issue but also didn’t mention any cost involved.
