Been searching without luck, hoping someone can advise. Nothing in the user manual gives a clear answer.

I'm picking up a 2022 ZS EV (Excite / base model in Australia) next weekend. This is the Gen 2 model. For the drive home I want to plug my iPhone in for Apple CarPlay, mainly for navigation.

Which USB port does it work with?

In my MG4 only the USB A port works for data. I just want to know what cable to take with me, will be travelling light.

Thanks!

word of warning - take a few cables with you as some might not work. I tried 3-4 different ones ("fast", short, long, thin, thick..) until I got one that worked. It's probably about the inner workings of the cable and the number of pins connected as not all cables are the same...
In the end, I got a cheap Bluetooth dongle from AliExpress and no more cables needed ...

Thanks, yes have experience of this with our MG4.

I've been using a wireless kit for so long I take it for granted, and I'll likely set up the same for my wife in the ZS.

This is more about the initial drive home, navigating all the new motorways I'm not familiar with. Once I'm out of the city I know my way.

I'll test cables I have in the MG4, I'd imagine if it works with it then it'll probably work with the ZS. I recall I ended up with a 50 cm Apple original cable which worked.

Mine works on both ports for Android Auto. I use the USB C socket for media and the other socket for AA . Don't see a reason it would be different Car Play though I may be wrong 🤔

I just went to test my cables and the original Apple 50 cm USB A to lightning cable was in the car. It works straight away in the MG4 so I will take that one with me.

Re Bluetooth dongle ... does it fix the MG issue where Android auto (often) requires cable put in/out to play online music etc. (Especially if go from underground garage - no service) As biggest bugbear have with vehicle or do you still need to reboot BT dongle or re connect often ... thanks for any help

I bought the cheapest possible on AliExpres and happy with it. Mine is only Bluetooth, there are some Bluetooth and WiFi. The only issue I had was when I first plugged it in the car, there was a fight between the car and the dongle, which one will have a connection with my phone - I just disconnected the car (NOT deleted, just disconnected) on my phone and connected the dongle. After that the phone still connects to the car as usual and connects to the dongle when I plug it in - takes about 10 seconds for Android Auto to start.

The only thing is that I have to unplug my dongle when I turn the car off. If it stays plugged in when I start the car again, AA will work but the music (Spotify) won't until I re-plug - it's most likely a conflict between the car and AA dongle on my phone Bluetooth settings but it doesn't bother me. I plug AA dongle only when I need Google maps navigation or going for longer drives when I want music screen displayed.

I never have to plug/unplug once I start the car and plug the dongle in. Works perfectly well. If you are underground and use internet to stream music, any issues are because your phone's got no signal. If you use Spotify or Amazon, you can download your music on your phone for playing without internet connection. Bluetooth dongle is only connecting the car to your phone (same as USB cable would) and the signal will break only if the phone is taken away from the car about 5-10 meters...

I'm not sure how that's better than a cable if you have to plug/unplug every time you use it.
I bought one from AliExpress which seemed to need both WiFI and bluetooth and always got in a pickle, wouldn't play music half the time etc and would randomly connect to my phone from the garage when the car was switched off and I'm in the house. I threw it in the bin in the end and use a short cable now. It's a bit rubbish that AA is not built in for a 2024 top of the range model. Every cheapo car I've rented going on holiday has wireless AA built in.

I have an AAWireless dongle, this works perfectly, but both that and the Bluetooth in the car, comes on at random times, and all of a sudden when standing in my kitchen, talking to someone, it will connect to the car.

Very annoying that the USB port is seemingly, randomly powered up, even with the car off, have been thinking about maybe seeing if i can rewire the car so that the USB port is NOT powered on, unless the car is on.

Not sure why they haven't got wireless AA/CarPlay in 2022 models but they have it in the new MGS5 EV - could be due to trying to keep the production costs to bare minimum until they can charge more for their cars ...

I dont even think that's the problem.

The infotainment has bluetooth and wifi, which are the 2 technologies used for AA wireless and AC wireless.

It's probably mostly down to them, not having made the software to handle the wireless protocol's....or because the wireless part needs extra ressources (Processor, ram, rom) that the car does not have.

Heck i even had a 2016 Vauxhall astra that had AA, but not wireless, it also had all of the needed hardware.

So again...Only a software issue.

I picked up the car today. Plugged in the phone with the cable and CarPlay fired straight up, was rock solid all day.

Started with 99% according to the display, and two stops along the way.

Tesla Supercharger at Raymond Terrace: 30.309 kWh / 39 minutes (lunch stop). $23.03

Evie Taree Service Centre: 31.858 kWh / 44 minutes (cup of tea and some phone calls). Free as I had a $50 gift charge voucher which was put towards that charge (else session would have cost $23.58).

Max power at Tesla stop I saw was ~ 53 kW while Evie tells me it was 58 kW. Much slower to charge than my MG4 (64 Essence), which I was expecting. I thought perhaps it might be a little faster but it's no big deal, this is not the car we'll do long trips in, this is for my wife's local driving.

Pacific Highway had been cleared following the recent floods and both lanes each way were open. They must have done a lot of work over the past week to get it back in good order, what a mess it was.

A 1 in 500 year flood.

Set to charge back up tonight during super off-peak. Here it is at the Tesla charger:

Not bad for A$26k (~UK£12.5) with less than 10 km on the odometer.

It drove well, very comfortable and quiet. The LKA wasn't as severe as my MG4, never tried to take me off the freeway like the MG4 does but it was still annoying. However I learned that when I disabled it, it stayed off when I got back in and restart! What a blessing.

The adaptive cruise control is better than the MG4. It's much smoother, doesn't over react so much to other vehicles and going up/down, over crests and the like.

Level 3 regen is not nearly as strong as the MG4 when I lifted my foot from the drive pedal, found I still needed to use the brake pedal more than I've grown accustomed to. This will actually suit my wife.

Also the infotainment touchscreen responds far better than my MG4. never had to keep tapping an option for it to take, it would move to the next screen faster and the screen would quickly scroll when desired. The MG4 infotainment head unit was a step backwards compared with this.

My final 2 hour leg I started with only a 30 km buffer between claimed range and actual distance to go, and since I didn't really want to stop for a quick third charge at Macksville I just set the cruise to follow a BYD Atto 3, then when they turned off the truck that was in front of them. 100 km/h and watched the gap between estimated range and distance to go climb slowly. By time I got home there was 65 km of estimated range remaining.

There are two USB A ports under the entertainment unit. The one on the right works for Apple Car play and Android Auto.
The car I just picked up has two USB ports below the display screen, the left is a USB C, the right a USB A and that was the one I used for CarPlay.
