Mary (not her real name), started her MG5 to hit the sales in town, but just before driving off she realised her purse was missing. She got back into the house, dropped her keys on the counter, went upstairs to get her money and off she went.

It’s only when the car refused to start coming home, she realised she took the hubby’s keys with her?

I’m scratching my head how this was even possible?

I'm assuming that there was no smart key in the car, and the car had been left in the ready mode while Mary went in to collect her purse, and that hubby's keys are for a different car.
In that case for safety reasons, i.e. the car suddenly stopping and not being able to be moved, once the smart key has been detected the car will be allowed to continue until the start / stop button is pressed at your journeys end. It will then say no smart key detected and not go back into the ready state when the start/ stop button is pressed.
It begs the question however, unless some of the details have been left out, and by my assumption, that the car was left unlocked during the shop.
