The active grill shutters of my MG4 Luxery (with heat pump) keep opening&closing, at least when the car is stopped, e.g. for a traffic light or on destination. If it also happens when driving, I don't know - can't hear. If I disengage the a/c, it stops. But at current temperatures of around 10 degrees C and a cloudy day, I don't think the a/c is active. Any ideas what could be the problem? May be a clogged temperature sensor? My dealer advises me not to spend money on it, but it really annoys me.

Just wondering. Why does it annoy you?

I have an "Essence 77" here in Australia which has the active grill shutters but I wouldn't know if they're open or closed at any particular time.

How do you even tell?

TIA

My shutters open whenever I run the A/C (and I’m stationary) but they don’t repeatedly open and close as far as I’m aware. I don’t know the behaviour when driving for obvious reasons.

Does your dealer advise you not to pursue because they don’t want to have to do the work? It might not cost you if it is a warranty claim.

We don’t have heat pumps for the MG4 here in Australia, so I’m not sure how that system behaves in terms of needing cooling when running, but according to some AI assistant (which I consider a pretty unreliable source) you don’t have a seperate A/C system if you have a heat pump, as the heat pump can reverse its operation and thus both warm or cool the car. Anyway, my point is that on a 10°C day your air condition is still working, I just don’t know if a heat pump needs the same cooling a conventional a/c does.

If it opens and shuts after a while than maybe it’s trying to prevent excessively cooling, but if it opens and closes continuously without pause I would think there is a faulty sensor somewhere, and your dealer should definitely look into that. It might just a weird little thing, but it could also be a symptom of something bigger.

@Brandt, do you know someone with the same model to check their shutters?

Does the issue happen if you set the HVAC temperature to very low thus inhibiting the heating element if the heating pump in case the heating pump is oscillating between the 2 functions, cooling and heating. (If the heating pump services both functions.)

As far as I know, the car does that in automatic mode to switch between interior and exterior air. In certain weather conditions the car has issues to decide which is more efficient and therefore opens and closes them more often.

I set mine to only use outside air.
