Software updates were a standard part of the MG service till about late September 2025. My MG4 was booked for its first 40,000 km service somewhere around that time and the schedule specified "All Software Updates". When it actually went in some time in October, MG had told all its dealers that Software Updates were no longer part of the standard service and so they were not done.

I complained and stated that when booked they were included and that was when the service contract was agreed. The Dealer reluctantly agreed & they were done, but I had to take the car back in..

Now if you want an update you need to complain that LKA etc is dangerous or something and they will usually do it as a warranty job. Put it all in writing.

I am happy with how the car software operates now. I always kept LKA on anyway and just learned to drive more accurately. Now I just get beeps when I stray next to the white line and the odd subtle steering wheel tug. Before it could be quite disconcerting though I had got used to it. Some comments like "My car is trying to kill me" were well over the top in my opinion.

There are quite a few other minor changes which are good but were not on my list of issues.

It is still the best drivers car I have ever owned. It really shines on a twisting hilly country road. Booting out of corners is really fun. LKA etc is always off on drives like that though.

Having previously lived in the UK, I understand how their country roads upset the LKA. Given the compactness of the country, there are a lot of middle income people living outside of the towns and cities where they work. Hence a lot of UK EV early adopters (which make up a large proportion of this forum) are using country roads and have LKA issues. While back in Oz we are much more urbanised and our country roads are wider. Having said that our other car, now in the hands of our son, is a Kia Cerato with LKA and it has in the past forced me into potholes on country roles, while trying to drive around them.

I got my first MG4 real cheap, seems it sent the unsuspecting driver into a white guide post hard enough to leave a core sample in the threaded tow hook hole behind the front bumper ..... must have been running late for church or something
I made sure they had the updated software installed before we collected the car, made them put it in writing that if the lane keep assist hadn't been updated and caused my wife to crash the car on the way home, the sales manager and salesman would be personally liable ..... got a few strange looks until I showed them photos of the car and their sticker on the window ..... frantic phone calls and trips to the car to check screens, before they were willing to sign away their houses

Form sent off, final payment made. All I have left to do is get two of the wheels refurbed (they are just outside the 50mm limit) and that's it, my tenure as an MG owner will come to an end.

When I ordered this car back in 2022, I used the term "bought" even though it was on PCP as I intended to keep it. I was excited to get it. However, its going back early. Its a real shame that it has come to this, but the constant failures, dealers "fixing" things, has rather taken the shine off. 😞

Pretty much the same as the wife's experience, glad hers is a company car

As I am getting close to one year of ownership, I want to give my thoughts on the car. To put it in a nut shell, I am very happy with the car and absolutely don’t regret buying it and I still would get one today.

Issues:
  • Broken tpms sensor (happened likely while changing to all season tires, so not really the cars fault)
  • Broken heater in the winter (terrible situation to be in, especially if your dealer doesn’t know anything about this car and can’t find the error even if it throws a DTC) Full story see here: Heating not working | MG4 EV (2022 to 2025) Forum
All issues where fixed under warranty.

Mods:

Likes:
  • 360 Cam (Very handy)
  • Front LED Lights (very bright with a good side spread)
  • Acc (very nice as I live in an area with a lot of traffic) - The update improved it a lot
  • Overall feel and handling (feels snappy and agile)
  • Range is enough for what I drive and the charging speed is fast enough
  • Looks of the car: Its unique, not your typical EV and yet sporty
  • Charge Port (I know it sounds weird but I like the way it looks with the 4 led sections)
  • Construction: Taking the interior apart is easy and very little things seem to be coded (unlike the never German cars). You can rip quad locks from the Computer and the car will still drive with no errors..)
  • Real Buttons on the steering wheel (Thank you MG for not giving us this touch slide trash)
  • Form and feel of the steering wheel (I think it has the perfect size and the shape is cool). The fake leather feels nice.
  • No subscriptions like in the ID series with heated seats and what not

Dislikes:
  • Service sucks (tried 4 dealers and 3 were total crap). One was overpriced, the other just dump (didn’t know the difference between left and right), the other one simply denied helping me. No 4 was very good and helpful (sadly located 250km away from me)
  • Fog in the rear lights drives me nuts
  • The piano applications: Some are more annoying than others like the ones at the steering wheel or the window switches
  • Auto dimming of the infotainment screen not really working well and the IPK is a bit to bright for my likings at night
  • Light Switch design (who had the idea that when I want to switch from automatic to manual beams to put the off position between these two?)

Neutral:
  • Software is ok. I don’t know what some people expect but this is not a Tesla. For me it’s fine except for some smaller bugs but I can live with that.
  • Quality: Just a solid build car nothing outstandingly crazy - some parts are of better quality (good panel gaps and overall feel of the plastics is good) and some of less good quality (like seat leather)
  • Some assistants are good (acc) others are less good (rear ending assist always triggers in city traffic - therefor I turned it off) others are ok (blind spot assist)
  • App is ok if it can connect to the car

Overall I traveled 11k kms with the car and am looking forward for the next year of ownership. I think the MG4 is great value for money and it has its faults, but for me the positives make up for them. I thought abut getting an ID3 as well but I didn’t because of the subscriptions, the touch slider controls, boring looks and higher price. I think MG absolutely nailed it with this car in terms of the overall package for the price. I would highly recommend this car to anyone getting into EVs on a budget looking for a fun daily driver.

Retired now but still a sporty, mostly fit Guy. My Xpower is the love of my life (after the Wife of course). Spent 31 years as a mechanic on various makes (that's what they called us in the old days - you know the good old days when we actually used to FIX things instead of just fitting them!) driven and owned a vast amount of cars, but this one makes all previous rides completely forgettable. Had her two years next month and just can't drive without a smile, it's not just the amazing 0-62, it's the way that folks must think they've hit reverse when you overtake at "light speed". I will finish by adding that ( I know that it cost around £1500) but you guys out there with Xpowers have no idea how wasted the car is without upgrading to 20" wheels on 255 rubber, the improvement in handling and grip is phenominal, it's no longer just a traffic light sprinter! As for the 70s vibes, I never had them before OR after fitting the big wheels and as can be seen it also looks fab, in my opinion they should have been STD fitment, at least then it stands out from all the regular models.

The 20" do fill the guards out nice, not real sure about the spokes pattern of the rims, but I guess that is an individual taste thing. The tyre profile looks very unforgiving and with the condition of the average non highway Australian road, I think I'd be spending a lot on rim straightening and replacement tyres after fracturing the cases ....
Have you changed the springs at all?

Did it have much effect on the kWh/100km, changing to the bigger wheels? Did it stop the front wheels from spinning if you are too aggressing on the launch from the lights or out of the corner?

I'd love to buy an XPower, but I can't see my licence surviving the required 3 yrs before the last points loss expired, I think I'd be lucky to get 6 months if truth be known.
The 51 already has them wondering what the hell happened as you pass, an XPower would have the licence plates and speed recorded on the dash cam and a knock at the door with a please explain within a few days ....

Hi there Terry in Oz. I have to tell you that the roads are not much better here in the UK than your outback, we spend most of the time dodging potholes and raised or dropped drain covers. My tyres are 255/35/20s Tomket sport which are B rated in the wet. No I haven't lowered it because for road use there's no need to as I've lost a little comfort in the name of handling and if you lower it and clobber a drain cover or the dreaded speed bumps and damage the batteries, bang goes your warranty. I'm pleased to say I don't have a dash cam, but being an old fart I don't overtake very often these days and with the evermore clogging of the roads over here there's little point. All the best Martin

Love the wheels, look very sporty 😍

I thought you might have raised it, not lowered it, especially at the back.
35 profile tyres around these parts are for show cars that go to events on a tilt tray
I broke the sidewall in a 265 75r 19.5 16 ply truck tyre on the front of my motorhome after hitting a hole that was full of black water, making it virtually invisible, I was doing 80km/h at the time ..... When we have the big rain events, many of the less used roads get hollowed out underneath and the first heavy vehicle to drive over it punches through ..... I reckon I must have been the next vehicle through on the particular road.
The MG4 survives most of the big potholes because I see them quick enough, but every trip would involve hitting at least one that either I didn't see or the wife thought she could fly over or something ..... I'm quite expecting a side wall failure any day on the standard tyres on the 51, but so far, we have been lucky ....
The car certainly looks good with the bigger tyres though
