Early considerations about the new MG Urban Comfort Standard range

48. It's not overhead where there'd sometimes be a driver's roof handle (like there is for the passengers), is it?
nope. There's an indent in the roof lining where the handle would have been, but nothing in its place. tbh the cubby holder in front of the cup holders, where the usb cables come through to the upper tray, is perfect for them. and in the many years i've driven cars of all kinds, whenever someone puts their sunglasses in the overhead compartment, i complain that the rattle drives me insane. so they fixed that problem for me 😝

in fact, i think many problems in my life are generally fixed by not giving me options 😅

@MG Clive

i took the wheel covers off.

the picture doesn't do it justice but it's also not to everyone's taste either. i think the wheel covers look good (they are a copy of the MGS5 alloys really) and they are standard wheel covers not specially designed. They are pretty easy to take off even though they are on tight.

53. You can now choose whether to be reminded to heat the battery, aka the once dreaded 'low temperature warning'
54. The. State of Health is now displayed
55. The energy consumption page is much tidier and possibly accurate
56. The estimated range does not change when switching between different drive modes, at least at full charge, but it did go from 204 to 193 as soon as i switched on the HVAC but didn't change when i switched the AC off. it might be temperature related, but it seems realistic given the efficiency so far. 🤷🏻‍♂️

58. im starting to get to know the Maxxis MS1 tyres a bit better. even though they are a Chinese and Taiwanese market exclusive, they aren't too bed. I don't think they have great rolling resistance compared to other premium brands but i watched a few tests recently of their top of the line summer performance and all season tyres and they scored really highly in all other criteria.
It seems they are therefore one of the better mid tier brands in the sense that they don't spend an enormous amount of money in marketing and they might not have the absolute best compounds but they do hold up well generally speaking and are definitely a good choice.
I know they are popular with mountain bikes and motorbikes but less known in the automotive.
I think i'd still rather have a michelin crossclimate 3 or Goodyear Vector 4 season gen3 come september but i can't justify spending the money right this moment.

I think im happier with the maxxis ms1 than i ever was with the conti premium contract C - continental once again letting me down in the summer tyre department.

Did I miss any mention of the car's weight? I think this is where some of the improved mpkWh is coming from. The lighter battery (42vs 49kWh) means also lighter motor 110 vs 125kW so it's a win win cycle!
absolutely

And the heat pump and heat recovery, let's not forget that.

although my reference isn't only the mg4 se i used to drive but the corsa-e i had prior.

It also runs on 16 inch alloys shod with 195/60 93 tyres. There might be more gains to be had with a different wheel/tyre combo although i'm not sure what would be better necessarily. Looks vs efficiency is unfortunately a real thing at the budget end of the market.

Lighter batteries are certainly a good thing coming to BEVs

But i think anyone could do with being more realistic about their actual battery capacity needs.

Along side a bit of driving efficiency education:
0-60 values are near meaningless once below the 10 seconds mark for every day driving. I understand the pleasure of quick acceleration as much as any enthusiast, but enthusiasts are a small minority.

Now that EV sales are ramping up, there are many drivers new to EVs who are obviously eager to feel that instant acceleration and see the regen breaking kick in, but will not understand how their driving habits are killing their fuel economy.

This car encourages you to drive responsibly without any of the drawbacks

First rapid charge today: used a Smart Charge Kempower charger so i would get a charging curve.

Ideal day really as it was between 15C and 17C this afternoon.

As you can see i only charged from 64% to 80% as it was just a test ahead of a longer journey tomorrow plus these are expensive compared to the 32p/kwh Tesla superchargers i will be using in the future.

The charge curve is self explanatory.

The GoM seems to be unaffected by the actual accumulated trip consumption, at least while the remaining charge is above 50%
it just quotes the WLTP figure of the HVAC is off, and 5% less if HVAC is on. And as far as i can tell, those figures are easily achievable.

Today's round trip in the Surrey hills.
All done in ECO, take 20 or so minutes off the accumulated time as that includes rapid charging while getting a coffee.

HVAC on and set to 20-21C
Ambient temp around 15-17C

mostly A and B roads, a bit of town and a brief stretch of motorway

ECO is a good setting. The car accelerates just like any equivalent ICE car and Millie, my lurcher, seems to prefer the even gentler acceleration.

it's no slouch especially if you put your foot down, but it helps save energy

True, but we need to find someone else who is up for it.
I'm never going to be able to drive at 70mph for an hour straight.
Could try at night, for like 5 or 10 minutes, out and back. But not soon.
