Efficiency calculation

Is the efficiency value being displayed calculated using velocity, acceleration/deceleration or are there actual sensors that measure power consumption and regeneration? Sometimes it feels like the car is creating energy out of thin air during the regeneration phase when going downhill after a long rise..

The car knows the distance it has travelled and how much power it's used to go that far, and together with knowing how much regen has put back into the battery, it gives an estimate of the m/kWh and how much further you can travel.
