Hi all,

As we all know, our engines come on and go off all the time.
What worries me is, when they come on, they sometime rev straight up to 2200 rpm, sometimes even more.
Surely this is bad for the engine, the oil can't have time to lubricate things. I was always told never to rev the engine after start up, let it idle so that the oil can get up to the top and lubricate.

Your views ?

Pete.

OK, but how many times a day did you start your Civic ?
Our engines and restarting about every 2 minutes when driving around town. .

I must admit it was one of the things that put me off the idea of a hybrid when I went BEV.

When I first got mine I had to get onto our nearby motorway with its new cold engine so took it very easy up to just 60mph and the engine was going some. Had no idea there was even a rev counter (if you can call it that)
On later finding and reading the manual and finding the 'rev counter', it was noted the engine must not exceed 3000 rpm for the first 1000 miles.
On repeating this basically cold run on to the motorway I discovered the poor thing was revving at 4000!!! at just 50mph. Have been watching this like a hawk ever since.
The only good thing is the oil is so thin it should be able to circulate very quickly, aiding restarts and cause less internal friction to improve the engine's efficiency. Apparently up to 40% on its Atkinson Cycle.

I wouldn't worry hybrid cars use a different oil to normal ice conventional petrol cars , because of the constant stop start scenarios with hybrid vehicles the oils have a different viscosity thickness which protects better so they operate better from cold starts different additives in them .
