We have an MG4 Trophy and a GivEnergy charger. For a year we have successfully set up a nightly scheduled charge on the cheap electricity rate via the charger app. This has suddenly stopped working. We can still plug and charge and charge at public chargers. Can anyone help? Thanks.

You have to work out if it is the car or the charger with the issue. You could contact GivEnergy and see if the charger is logging any faults and if you know anyone else with an EV see if that will charge on your charger.

Can you do a non scheduled charge with your car?

The Givenergy app still works for me.

Can you get on the Givenergy online portal and view the charger information on there?

They updated their login method recently to create an SSO which was a bit of a faff to set up, but I don't think customers are forced to use it yet.

Is the light still showing on the unit itself?

Perhaps try turning it off for a while at the consumer unit and try turning it on again.

I had a problem with ours once (can't remember exactly what it was) and did a factory reset which cleared the issue. Though it did mean I had to re-connect to the Wifi which was an extra process to go through (slightly inconvenient).

There is a Givenergy forum similar to this one, though I hang out here much more because this place is full of characters.

Let us know how you get on!

Your AC unit might have failed. Have you tried AC charging somewhere else?

Yes we can do a non scheduled charge and can also charge with public chargers. I have had trouble getting help from the home charger manufacturer but will keep trying to get through to them.

As an alternative do you ( or neighbour/ friend ) have a granny charger you can try to try to eliminate one of the possibilities of either the car or GE charger being at fault.
Yes we can try that. Thanks.

I haven’t

I haven’t found the GivEnergy online portal to view the charger there. Is that via their website?

We have done the usual turning it off and on again and the issue remains. We can do a nonscheduled plug in and charge without any problems - it’s just the overnight one with the cheap electricity rates we want.
Thanks I’ll have a look at the forum.

Oh so the unit and the car are working, just the schedule that isn't?

Hopefully you can get into the scheduler via the website.

So either something strange has happened with the givenergy scheduler or with the car?

Last year I set up the car to charge between 7pm and 4pm so that it wouldn't charge during our peak rate time. Could there be something like that set up by accident?

I've remembered the issue I had that I resolved with a factory reset. It wasn't the timing, it was that it wouldn't charge above 20% of the usual speed.

Yes it’s just the schedule. So something has gone wrong somewhere. I have the GivEnergy online portal for my solar panels and battery but for some reason it doesn’t show the EV - only via the GivEnergy app.

There is a card down the side of the page. Clicking on it should make it the main focus. Then it should be possible to link your account to your charger. I did it 18 months ago and I can no longer remember the exact process.

Have you done a factory reset of the unit? After doing it you need to get it reconnected to WiFi etc. but it might be the way to go.

Different charger, but I find with scheduled charging, my MG4 will say it has started charging but the rate will stay at 0kW.
After 10 minutes it gives up and I get a message from Octopus to say the charging has failed. (On IOG with drive pack, but has the same with plain Octopus Go).

My workaround is to stop the charge via the MG app just after the schedule has started and then start charging.

My wife's Kia Soul has no issue, so it is not the charger.
If Octopus decide there is cheap enough electric when I plug the car in to allow immediate charging, the car charges fine.

I always charge at home and set the charging schedule using the car screen.
I use the BG EV Tariff from 00.00 to 05.00.
On a number of occasions, I have found that the car is charging well before that time by checking the ismart app.
I have then had to finish charging using the app and then resetting the car charging schedule.

Could I ask if others have had such problems and have you found the reason for this.
Thank you.

Are you able to check if the car is charging without opening the iSmart app? (e.g. lights on the EVSE, or via the EVSE's own app).

(Just in case opening the app itself causes the scheduled charge to start - e.g. any schedule in the app overwrites the one in the car).

Thank you for this. Yes I have checked the lights around the charging port and instead of being out, they are green.
In that case, it is easiest to use the ismart app to select Finish Charging.

Today for instance. Having scheduled a charge for midnight using the car screen, a little later I happen to look at the Smart Meter and noticed the electricity was higher than expected, I checked the lights as above and the car was charging prematurely without using the app.

This only seems to happen occasionally.

Does your EVSE have an app with which you could schedule charging? If yes then I'd suggest using that rather than the car or iSmart ... if using the EVSE app then remove all schedules from the car and iSmart.

In nearly 3 years of ownership, my Trophy has always started charging before the scheduled time. I only have a dumb Podpoint charge point (EVSE before I get corrected :)) so have to set the schedule on the car. Even when scheduled it will start charging within a few minutes of plugging in. The only work around that I've found that works for me pretty much every time is to plug in, manually start the charge from the car's screen and then, once it has started charging, immediately stop the charge. I then lock the car and don't touch it or the app again until after the scheduled charge has started. Unlocking the car or opening the app are both likely to cause the car to start charging. It sounds a real pain but I've got so used to leaning in to start and stop the charge after I've plugged the cable in that I don't really find it much of a bother. I'll mention it again at its 3rd service...
