EV tariff increases the daily tariff !

Doh!... that's confusing on a car forum :(

But an excuse to post...

Have realised it takes nearly 4 hours to charge within our 5 hour charging window there would be no point getting another big one. However, another smaller one might be worth it, like a 5kWh.
You can never have enough kWh... just charge up for the full 5h. And more battery means you can carry more over from a sunny day :)

Why does it charge so slowly?
Mine start at 15 KW and drop to 5 for the last 10%.
I can easily get them fully charged during the six hours window. Total capacity is almost 40kw but I never use the last 20%.

Why does it charge so slowly?
Because it's not that big. The more kWh you have, the higher charge rate is possible.

Max charge rate of an LFP cell is a function of both temperature and SOC, typically measured in C (that's charge or current rate, not Coulombs). A typical LFP cell will have a max charge rate like this...

EVE-LF280K charge vs temperature profile.webp

Thanks for this.
You learn something every day 😁

There are some entitled people out there as the fallout from Octopus's announcement goes on.

There is one guy on twitter (not a fan to begin with) Jordan EV guy, he is spitting the dummy and bad mouthing Octopus as he charges with a grannie charger on his Tesla and now he will only be able to add 54 miles a night and he needs more than that.

It's ridiculous and he is getting called out on it, begs the question about a home charger if you need a substantial top up every night or so. He however thinks he should continue to get extra hours at 7p so he can grannie charge.

It is obviously nothing to do with losing all those cheap extra slots for his house🤔

It's people like this that have forced the change, greedy ruining it for majority.

I didn't know you could use a granny charger until yesterday.

He must have the patience of a saint, I only do 6000 miles a year and the granny charger annoyed me so much. I remember when I first got the car and the charge was low, with driving it a few miles it took me two days to get the charge up.

Fair enough, each to their own. I did 8,000
miles last year, all on me Granny Charger..
No problems whatsoever. Suits my needs
perfectly. 🙂

Nope. In Summer it was about every 4/5 days. In Winter. It was about every 2/3 days. Obviously it varies from week to week. Depending on all sorts of things.
But like I say, I'm more then happy with that. 🙂👍
I managed a similar annual mileage for almost 2 years mostly with the 'granny'. I used a lot of solar excess in the summer. Ultimately I had a last minute 170 mile round trip in winter on fast roads that left me borderline getting home because I hadn't got enough in overnight. That and a small windfall meant I got a Zappi and now with 2 EVs I find it more convenient.

I think most of the people who have these tariffs also have home batteries. I don't care a button what price ticket they put on the daytime use, because I hardly ever use any.
Unless you also have a Heat Pump as I do and at this time of year the 10 kWh overnight battery charge is exhausted around lunch time. But it's true that for 8 months of the year the day rate is immaterial to me.

I don't think most would have a home battery, I haven't. Just looked at my latest Octopus bill and I paid an average of 15.75p per unit including VAT. I only do about 6000 miles a year, so not lots of charging, but I always try and have a shower and do washing in the cheap period.
I've EV, PV Heat Pump and Home Battery and last bill (October 2025) from Octopus had a average of under 8p/kWh, but I'd expect it to rise to around 12p in January/February, although have just removed Gas and switched over to an Induction hob we'll use more daytime full rate tariff and that will push up the average rate.
