Granny charging

At the end of the day, the percentage loss when charging at only 8 or 10A is quite a high proportion of the amount actually charging the batteries - one of the reasons why we charge using a commando socket, as others have pointed out earlier in this thread.

it’s 10 am and I have just plugged the MG into the charger. I have 5 kW of spare solar showing but the charger is only putting 1.3 kW into the car. I think you are correct in saying the charger restricts the output for safety reasons.
I think the best way for me to go might be for me to get the Sparky to put a 15 A socket in the garage and get a third-party charger that can safely use the available kilowatts. Does that make sense?
I know the sensible thing would be to install a dedicated charger, but I don’t think we will be in our present home for too much longer.
Thanks for all your help and comments so far.

Edit moderator: Corrected units.

Yeah if you want to pay for the 15A socket install I would do the same. We are (or should be anyway) finally only months away from moving so I’m just using the 10A socket. Otherwise I would’ve looked into a 15A socket for this place as well.

Fixed a few units for you ;)

And, just for clarification... you say "get a third-party charger that can safely use the available kilowatts"... but with a 15A socket installed you will still only be able to deliver a maximum of 15A x 230V = 3.45kW into the car and hence you will not be able to use all the available kilowatts - though, obviously, it will be much better than you are achieving at the moment.

Yes, you’re right. By saying “available kilowatts” I meant those available after the house has used bits and bobs. The most we regenerate is around 6 kW but it usually levels out around 4.5. I think 3.5 is a realistic target. I’ve ordered a new charger with both 10 and 15 amp options. I’ll use the 10 and see how I go and make a decision on the 15 amp socket after I’ve used it for awhile. it’s more of an interest rather than a necessity.!😂
