Hi All
First time on forum has just had our plug in HS for two weeks now. We love it and so do a lot of people who have seen it as well 👍
Only thing I can’t seem to fathom if anyone has any ideas is when I try to charge from our wall charger (ev project) can’t get it to start charging straight away. Sometimes can take 20 mins for it to start.
Is this the app at fault 🤔 or can you not use the app to commence charging instead?
When I use other chargers it seems to be ok
Any feedback wud be useful.

Hi Again
Just been to try to charge and have come to the conclusion that the app isn’t connecting quickly enough to start charge from it.
So went into car and selected energy management from display and it shows it was charging without being initiated by the app. When I then accessed the app in the car it showed it being charged.
So the app is the issue in it connecting to the vehicle.
Hope this might help others in the future.
Will keep updating on this if I have more to add 👍

You do not describe the exact symptom, but it sounds like you are using the iSmart app, pressing 'Start Charging' and then you get a 'Failed' error. You keep re-trying and then (eventually after 10+ re-tries over 10+ minutes) it actually works (and starts charging).
  • If "yes" then this is exactly what I experience too.

From what I can tell, this is 'normal' behaviour, caused by network timeouts. Basically the car talks to the internet via a built-in e-sim (connecting to your local phone mast). Naturally the car can't use its phone 24/7 (to talk to the internet) otherwise it would use up all its 'standard' battery, so it must connect from time to time (maybe every 20 seconds or so?). Sometimes there will be timeouts connecting to it. Also if the signal is poor (or whatever else goes wrong for the connection) then this will also cause an error.

I find that if you keep trying then the car will (eventually) wake up enough for you to connect before it times out. However, I've given up trying this nowadays - I find it's too frustating to use iSmart to manually start a charge. Instead, it's way more convenient to just walk into the car and press the infotainment button (like you say) to manually start the charge.

That said, now that I have installed a fast (7kw 30amp) charger (rather than my old 10amp granny charger) I no longer need to ever manually give it a boost during the daytime. Instead, I just let it charge overnight (during my 5 hours of cheap EV electric tariff) via a scheduled timer I have set up on the car.

Finally, for what it's worth, we have just bought a brand-new Cupra Born pure EV (very nice car, can recommend it). It too has an app which (just like MG) you can do things like manually start charging. Again (exactly like MG) it is hit and miss whether it can connect and start/stop the charging, and (again) I just gave up and went inside the car and manually pressed the infotainment screen's button
=> The problem with connecting to the car (via an app) is not MG-specific. The Cupra has exactly the same design flaw/inherent-problem

Thanks for your info really informative and makes a lot of sense.
Starting to charge like u said without the app initially and it catches up. We are in the Shropshire hills so signal patchey at times.
Cheers Steve
