I hate my MG4

I probably got a lemon built on a Friday!,
If you got a petrol engine car when they first became mainstream and it was nothing but problems and never lived up to a single claim, im certain it would put most people off wanting another.

When you add up the fuel savings to the massive depreciation of your EV, you have not saved a penny!
A £30k MG4 will lose £20k in 2 years and you aren't spending that much on fuel.

Do you also really love sitting at a service station for up to an hour, spending extra money of shite food an coffee because thats something EV lovers always say, the long wait is nice, it breaks up the journey etc etc. but the reality is, a 5 hour journey in an EV will take 6-8 hours with changing!

Also have you ever been on a service station charging on a bank holiday when 30 people are all trying to charge at the same time?? if so you will know that you will struggle to get 20kW of power and the charge time raises to several hours.
Got to ask, you say spending £30000 on an MG 4, which no one in their right mind is paying for an se. Indeed a 77 kw extended range new can be bought for £26000. If you are getting 140 miles at 70 mph in the winter that is what you signed up for on a standard range.

If you wanted more milage you should have gone for a long range or extended range. All this info is widely available and has been for years

I haven't driven an XPower so can't comment on that, but I don't recognise some of the things mentioned. Driving position is fine, no issues, seats are comfortable and much better than the concrete ones in my partners VW, ride is average. I don't know how the XPower differs but my MG4 has a very smooth drive train, and I prefer the RWD, some of the FWD Kias have a tendency to spin up their wheels. With all the issues you noticed, most of which would be obvious on the test drive why go ahead and buy the car?

We had a mark 7 golf estate, it was a good all rounder but nothing amazing. As for the Skoda Octavia, that wouldn't be on the list because it's an ICE car.

I know the MG is not the best EV out there, it is a starting point on my EV journey. When I test drove it I really enjoyed it and there wasn't any obvious issues. My main objective was to get my running costs down before I retired. I actually put a deposit down on a Corolla which was lovely to drive, but had second thoughts on it because of how cramped it was.

Might be “fine”, but my point is others are better. Getting in and out of the car is not nice. It’s been raised on here before saying how awkward it is, largely due to the huge side bolsters. Passengers regularly comment on how hard it is getting in and out. It’s not effortless, which it should be. Not a nightmare, but just one of many areas of the car that are ‘ok once you get used to it’.

Agree with the wheel spin in the fwd Kia EV, but if we’re talking about rwd driving pleasure, there are plenty of rwd cars that drive a lot better. A 2016 rwd 320d BMW would be much nicer to drive and an awful lot cheaper to buy and run (when viewed collectively).

For the most part, you don’t notice the fwd vs rwd unless you’re pushing on - and a mg4 trophy isn’t a car you get to have ‘fun’ in.

BMW scrapped rwd in the 1 series because 99% of owners thought it was fwd - the average joe doesn’t know or care, i suspect even more so in an MG.

When the car comes to a dead stop, you can feel the motors almost buzz as they go from crawling to 0mph. Drivetrain isn’t very good. Again, it’s ‘fine’, but others are better.

All noted on the test drive. I chose the XPower simply because I’m used to having high powered cars and opted for the speed over creature comforts. Have since found a lot issues with ownership that spoil the XPower which wouldn’t be immediately noticeable even after 2 weeks of ownership.

The Octavia was a random example of any perfectly good ICE car. You could choose any.

My Lexus example for one. Much better car and bulletproof. I save £350pcm on fuel, which offsets the additional cost of the mg so I’m no worse off. Makes my bad decision easier to stomach.

If you have the choice between a good ICE car, or a good EV, for sub £20k with £10k left over to help your kids get on the property market, but choose to opt for a £30k+ MG, you’re nuts.

I made a mistake and was silly to buy a car purely based on how fast it was. I knew it was crap before I got it. But 90% of the time it’s crap and isn’t fast either (shit battery and the throttle response feels like it’s operated via dial up).

Lesson learned.

To be fair, I'm not sure if any of this was true when the MG4 first came out 3 years ago.

The side bolsters must be an XPower thing, never noticed it in the Trophy.

I have my MX5 for a bit more driving fun, but someone on here did say they preferred how the Trophy drove and actually thought it was more fun than their XPower.

The buzz issue at low speed must be either an Xpower or your car issue, the smoothness of the drive is what I enjoy most about the car, as well as the instant power.

Sounds like you made a mistake, I've had cars in the past that I regretted getting, but nothing so bad that I wanted to get rid of it quickly.

When the trophy, X power and er came out they were all over £30k and that is what people paid, there are members on here who paid full price for there car.

Seats are the same. It’s bottom part of the seat that are a problem.

Someone asked a month ago for ‘tips’ on getting in and out of the car because of it 😂

Think the buzz/hum I get is from the front motor so probably true. Have also heard the trophy drives better because of the rwd.

Biggest issue imo is so many faults could be fixed so easily. And should have before launch.

Apple car play being intermittent, air con not reaching target temps, not cycling through ‘favourites’ radio stations, not saving driving profiles/preferences

If those niggly issues were fixed (easy software update?) it would make the whole ca nicer to own.

Having ‘ok’ driving position, a ‘not bad ride’ and ‘decent’ range is acceptable when the rest of the car actually works. Putting up with that whilst setting air con to 28 degrees just to stay warm isn’t acceptable when 99% of used and new cars on the market don’t have those issues.

MG let themelves down. It COULD have been a brilliant little car, but they CHOSE to make it shit for reasons I don’t understand .

That's a weird one with the bolsters, they are very soft, never come up as an issue, but the sill is quite wide.

I never have the temperature above 23 degrees, so that doesn't sound good.

What's wromg with the driving position, I haven't noticed any problems?

I did and it was great value at the time, nothing else available at that price point could touch it. Brilliant car.
At that time and that price there was nothing else close it's a pity MG aftersales didn't match the car.
Hence why some people decided they were happy to pay a bit more for a different car

Not really, I wouldn't say the Kia engine was weak, 174bhp is pretty decent in an SUV of that size, and the DCT box was fine. I test drove quite a few cars of the same era as the MG before buying it and wouldn't say they were miles better than the MG.
Kia and Hyundai both went through a really bad time with their engines blowing up, I knew a Hyundai mechanic who couldn't keep up rebuilding their petrol engines a few years back.
That I imagine is what is meant by weak

Me too. So happy with it. Sure I realise I could have got one for a lot less some time later, but I had an insurance write-off on my hands, and what is a girl supposed to do?

I've recently upgraded my faultless and excellent MG4 Trophy to the MGS5, apart from a few (now) small teething issues, the S5 is lovely to drive, more comfortable driving position and faster in sport mode than any MG4 except the very quick XPower.
I loved my MG4, it only went due to huge non economic balloon payment required to keep it.

I think that must have been the diesel engine were the tensioner was causing engine failures. They are also having CCU issues on recent EVs as well, I still look at the forum.

It may have been the diesel engines, can't remember, it was a few years ago, my Hyundai Tucson blew up it's diesel turbo.
