I love my MG4, but...

Thank you very much for your detailed response! Just ordered the seat belt bucket holder!
Regarding the auto-light issue, the hack you mentioned seems to work, but it’s not pretty. I found that there are already some 3D printing schematics to be downloaded, but no 3D printer on my side. Need to wait.

I agree. Sound is not bad overall, but I miss the bass a lot. How was that procedure? Any tips on how to install the subwoofer?

Thank you all for your feedback. Really appreciated!
Unfortunately I am no good with popping off panels to wire up a sub and amp so I got my local audio specialist to do it for me as well as hardwiring front and rear dashcam

Hey fellow Trophy owner, have had some minor niggles similar to yourself, (mostly all) liveable and fixable with a bit of messing around with settings and fixtures.

Automatic brightness: Switch the infotainment to Dark Mode, it's much better IMO, and doesn't need adjusting brightness for day/night - which brings us to

360 Cameras: it won't switch over between Light/Dark mode if it's always on Dark Mode. Try cleaning your cameras, I've found the quality to be very good with mine.

And light sensors: your screen won't change light to dark if it's set Dark mode, and there is a way to mod the light sensor plastic cover - see Hillbilly Hack : Auto lights always coming on ? Hillbilly hack.

LKA: yeah this sucks having to turn it off, but some versions of infotainment update seem to fair better than others, I'm on v.24 and don't find it too intrusive.

Sound system: a few members have upgraded the door speakers and even tweeters and made a notable difference, see the thread 'MG4 will upgrade speakers : MG4 Will upgrade all speakers and add a sub

Back seats seatbelt: seat belt holders from Amazon. Works a treat for many

You mention setting screen as dark mode but how do you do that? I know you can change brightness but don’t know if and how to permanently set as dark mode. The constant changing from light to dark as you drive in shadows is annoying.
Also I totally agree ref LKA. It’s downright dangerous on rural roads, as sometimes it picks up a white line by the kerbside and jolts you into the centre and oncoming traffic. I’ve written to MG Customer Service and they just quote the argument of meeting NCAP conditions. But at least they should allow a permanent setting of ‘alert only’ and avoid the wheel jerk.

Remove (or drill and fit a clear sticker over the hole) the light sensor cover and all your mode switching foibles will be resolved. ;)

There is a settings bar within the main system settings, I'll see if I can find it again and post a picture of where to find it when I get back to my car tonight.

I dont usually have much of a bad experience with LKA - usually gentle and calm, but when I did a 180 mile return journey last week - country lanes were a good portion of the trip - and the car went into total meltdown as I drove near the centre line to avoid the soft verge, and when I got closer to the verge to avoid oncoming traffic - it tried to drag me back towards it, harshly too, all in the space of a minute.

Crossing the lines on clear roads to avoid potholes and other rural obstructions, dead foxes and such, resulted in a swift kick in the tadger and the steering wheel being ripped from grip and straight over the aforementioned pothole/crater/fox-Soup.

Safe to say I switched it off pronto and turned it off before setting off on the return journey.

We are entering into a new stage of EV ownership for some people now.
The first EV that you drive compared to an ICE is usually a very surprising and pleasant experience. They are usually all very smooth and powerful. They are also all automatic.
Many people will come from ICE for the first time from a manual car to the EV and it’s usually really hard not to be impressed.
We then enter another stage where EV’s are compared with each other - not comparing with an ICE. This is a completely different situation.
This is where those that are not new to EV’s draw relative comparisons which have more meaning.
This is really where all EV’s should be compared going forward.

Only just come across this thread.
Re the automatic lighting. What version is your software? The reason I ask is that I had the same niggle about the lights until I had the lock-in patch installed along with other updates (no idea of numbers I'm afraid).
From then on the automatic lights have been just fine, they come on and off at decent light levels now.

The option is just below the brightness setting.
Swipe left, Settings, General settings, about the 3rd or fourth line down is Background auto-switching giving the options of auto, dark and light.

I am waiting for the dual motor or extended range. What you highlight seems to be a constant theme which is putting me off a bit. I’ve had a test drive which was great but isn’t long enough to highlight these many niggles ☹️

Did you get anywhere with the automatic light/dark issue - I have the same issue and my MG4 is only 2 weeks old. It is really annoying 😳

I always turn automatic lights off during the day. Flick the switch on the left hand stalk to the right. You know if you've forgotten because the infotainment display goes into night mode when the headlights switch on.

Take the cover off the light sensor on the front fascia, just under the windscreen. Preserve it in case a future software update (rumoured to exist) fixes this issue. Obtain a 3D printed replacement for the cover with a much more open top, search the forum for threads with "Hillbilly" in the title to find out how. Hey presto, lights stay off until dusk.

Have my MG4 Trophy for a month now and I'm loving it more the more I drive it. Nevertheless, there are small annoyances that hurts a little the experience of driving it:
  • Bluetooth pairing: this was really not good. Never worked properly. But changed the Bluetooth car name and now it's working fine. Let's see if it stays that way.
  • Automatic brightness: this was working at the beginning, but since a couple of weeks, it doesn't. I need to manually adjust brightness between day and night.
  • Light sensors: during a sunny day, every time I go through a small bridge, or maybe a road with some trees shadow, the lights turn on. This is specially annoying when using automatic Light and Dark mode (which I do, mainly because automatic brightness doesn't work).
  • LKA: hate it. I really think this is dangerous while driving.
  • 360 cameras: it does the job but quality is meh. Also, while using the cameras, if the dark/light mode changes, the cameras will turn off.
  • Sound system: it's really not good. Maybe a physical subwoofer would greatly improve the sound quality but, as it is, speakers are not great at all.
  • Back seats seatbelt: they are not fixed. That means that it's really difficult to insert the seatbelt with one hand. This is really bad specially when you trying to put the seatbelt on your child. Not good at all.

I know some are nitpicking, but it's annoying when you daily drive the car.
Most of it are software related, so I hope future firmware updates will resolve some of it.

What annoys me the most, is that the cheapest Model 3 is now only 1.500€ more expensive than my MG4. And probably, most of the things I've just referred would not exist (certainly new ones would arise, but still...).

What about you guys, do you experience the same on your side? Any suggestion/tip in order to fix/minimize any of these annoyances?

Cheers from Portugal

I sympathise with you. When I had my MG4 it was a fantastic car to drive but all the niggly things eventually made me sell jt and get an inferior EV but a better car an E-Golf.

With the MG4 I eventually loathed that I had to turn LKA off every time I got in ( particularly sections of my commute made it behave in a very dangerous way )

I also hated the rattly aircon pump, inconstant lights, lack of rear interior lighting ( when loading my child in seat at night ) and not seeing though my rear window when parking. I could carry on about all the little things that annoyed me, but it’s safe to say the E-Golf just does the Golf thing of doing everything very well but not particularly exciting.

I got a sub and amp installed in mine and now it's a proper sound system! I could also change the speakers to make it even better but don't feel the need to anymore - highly recommend getting a sub and amp if you're into your music.
Hi, what sub and amp did you get? Where did they put the sub? Do you still have the ability to change balance left/right forward/rear?
