Is it still not possible to update some of the cars software yourself, it is such a drag not having OTA updates, it looks like many things can be updated via the engineering menu.

Yes you can update yourself ... but you need to get a copy of the update files and put them on a USB drive. Someone here has various versions available on a Google drive link or similar.

As ever, any self-applied updates are at your own risk.

If you update to R63 via USB you still need to connect via SIPS to apply a config update. (Some things won't work properly if you don't - e.g. the battery charge limit slider). If you can't do that then I'd suggest not updating to R63.

Yea I was reading about that on this forum, looks like I better skip R63 as I don't want to loose the charge limit slider, I could go with R59, I am currently on R30, is it worth going to R59 does it offer that much more.

I did the update and all went well, see my posts in the following thread for my experience.

A friend has bought a 64 kW SE and he is on the R13 software, does any1 know what is the latest software he can go to without needing a configupdate from the dealer.

As per replies you received elsewhere, if the car is still on R13 then there are probably a lot of other software module updates that the car needs, so upgrading only the Infotainment may be a fool's errand.
