Keeping track of my MG4 (efficiency)

Hello.
I'll be using this thread to share information with you about my MG4, and at the same time I'll use it for myself, for keeping track of its mileage, etc.

As a small introduction, I got my MG4, new from the dealership, at the beginning of June 2024.

It is a MY23 MG4 Standard (with the 51kWh LFP battery), in Diamond Red. It was on R33 software when I picked it up.

As for the stats, I'll be keeping track, monthly, of the following:

Do these low average speeds mean you mainly drive around town an less so on highways?

Yes. Lots of time wasted sitting in traffic, dropping the kid at school, going to the factory then to the office (my work involves being in two different places almost everyday). Even the manoeuvres needed for parking the car in the apartment building garage takes some time.

Also, because of the way the car turns itself on (simply by placing your bum on the seat) this will result in it being on (with the speed average dropping...) for long periods of time, while static.

At least that's what happens with me, and as a result the average speed quickly comes down.

As for highway, I'd say maybe 1/6 of the total kilometres were done in highway.

That's fine, of course.

Personally, I have always been a bit of a nerd when it comes to efficiency and have always enjoyed keeping track of the consumption figures of my cars. At least during one full year.

Not only that, but for EVs in particular, getting to know your car's efficiency (in all sorts of scenarios) will help when planning longer trips, so the more reason for doing so.

I use the SAIC Home Assistant integration to keep tabs on mine. All the data automatically logged. Also auto log all home charging data, and I keep records of any charge sessions away from home.

I think I lost my manual data log for the initial months but here's the table so far:

The kWh values are all energy used to charge the car (i.e. what we pay for), not energy consumed while driving, which will be less by ~5-10%.

November was all done without any DC fast charging. Had one longer highway trip to visit my brother but was able to charge long enough with the granny charger to get home without need of any charging en route (roughly a 500 km round trip).

Costs were A$0.816/100km (£0.668 /100 miles for our UK friends).
Insanely cheap to run when charging from home.

A couple of main drivers.

The first has to do with when we started with free grid energy tariffs, the other is to do with our household consumption patterns.

Firstly, the chart further up covers the energy consumed since we bought the car (up the date of posting) whereas my previous post was for November 2024 only.

If we look at the equivalent totals chart today:

Can see that it's not all that different to before.

At the time we bought the car we did not have a retail electricity plan with a free tariff period, that started six months later in March 2024 and it was only free 12-2PM on weekends. Then in July I swapped to a new plan with 2 hours (12-2PM) free every day, so charging became more concentrated during that period.

The second is about our household consumption patterns.

In Spring (Aug-Oct) and Autumn (Apr-May) months our need for heating or cooling using our reverse cycle aircon systems is minimal to zero, while solar PV output is still very good.

Summer (Nov-Mar) is when we consume a big chunk of energy for cooling/dehumidification and so those system consume a lot of our solar PV generation.

As a result we have twice as much excess solar PV generation available to consume in Apr, May, Aug, Sep & Oct than we do in Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb & Mar.

Then there is the assumption on how EV charging energy is assigned to solar and grid source buckets by ChargeHQ. It is assumed that all other loads on our property are satisfied first by our solar PV and only generation in excess of that is counted as being available for EV solar charging.

I purchased a MY24 with the 51 kWh battery in June this year and have done just over 1800 km before the last battery charge. Most of the use has been around town but includes one 150 km highway trip. The average efficiency is 15.8 kWh/100 km according to the car, 16.2 by my measurements, including 17.4 on the highway run. I'm very happy with the car apart from a recurring low tyre pressure alarm.

Yep, because my mind boggles at all the data. And I do always say each to there own. And I mean that. If that's your thing, totally fair enough. But I can't help thinking to myself, why? Some of the spreadsheets, on here, which you are correct I don't understand, still look very impressive.
