I've just put a deposit on a 2023 MG ZS EV.
I'm buying it, subject to a test drive next week.
I'd like to hear from any long-term owners about reliability, etc., and their experience with MG motors.
Never had an EV before, and my current diesel car hasn't had any real problems in the last 13 years that I've owned it, hoping to get something as reliable.
Thanks.

I bought new in Jan 25 and it has worked just fine for 6,000 miles.
The infotainment is a bit flaky but I find that entertaining.
I also found you can get the car to believe it is ready to charge with the blue lights showing, but if the connector is not fully home it won't charge. There is a good 1/2 inch gap between the lights going on and the cable being fully home.

Just recently bought an ex-rental '72 plate with 96k, very happy with condition and price paid (sub-£10k).

Only concern is all service history is non-MG, so no software updates since new, therefore I paid £50 for Tesla "upgrade" to be applied.

If your purchase is sub-80k miles check that an annual MG service has been done, to protect your Warranty, which may hopefully mean that any new software updates got done each year.

If you buy it, be sure to do a top balance charge (AC from sub-20% to 100% and leave connected after for 4/5 hours)

From what I've read on here, it's a lottery 🤷‍♀️

From taxi driver with 100,000 miles on an MG4, without issue... see;
Highest mileage MG4 owner

through to this poor chap with 2 years+ of hassle with his ZS...
Not how I thought today was going to pan out...
Just read it, about an hour I think, a bit worrying to say the least.

It has less than 1000 miles, and I'm buying it from an MG dealership.
However, it is over 2 and a half years old, but when I asked about service history, she told me that it had its first one done and was due a second one. I'm led to believe it should be done every year or every 10,000 miles, whichever is sooner.

Which therefore means it's already fallen foul of the once a year MG requirements.

As it's from an MG dealer I would want it "in writing" before going ahead that the MG warranty is intact if you purchase and any potential subsequent claims will be honoured (within the known restrictions, which fundamentally are a three year warranty on most items)

Yeah 12 months or 15k. So should have had two services. If it has the correct service history you could ring the AA to see if it is covered by them.

My 2020 ZS EV, Mk1, has 47,000 mikes on the clock, and has never missed a beat. Great car...

You only hear the worst examples here. As long as the 7 year warranty is intact, go for it...:)

I saw it advertised on my local MG dealership website, when I phoned up about it she said that it had had it's first service but nothing about any others, however it went on Autotrader yesterday saying "full service history" with the last service in March 2025 so It's up to date on servicing, I think she made a mistake, I will check though.

Thank you, that's good to know.

Hmmm... only 1000 miles on a 2.5 year old car rings alarm bells in my mind. Why has it done such a low mileage? That's like only 5 full charges of the battery. Was it a owned by a low mileage user doing a 33-mile monthly round trip to the supermarket? Or has it had an accident and/or complex repairs that has meant it has been sat around in a dealership for 18 months going nowhere?

I think she made a mistake, I will check though.

Check and double check - and don't believe what salesmen or women tell you. Here's another read for you ;)

I'm not trying to be negative, just saying go in with your eyes fully open.

Yes, I'll ask the questions and get it in writing. I've also copied the Autotrader ad, which states full service history.
I know they do a lot of motability stuff, so I'm assuming that the owner has gone into a home or has passed away, but I'll be asking the question.
Not seeing negativity, thanks for your help.

If the selling dealer is the same one who sold the car from new, then they should hold a record of both services, ask to see it.
Two and half years old, it should had two annual services by now.
Check when the car was first registered ( sounds like spring / summer car ) then you can check if the car was serviced at the correct time intervals, to comply with the T&C’s of the MG 7 years warranty.
The service schedule in the UK is every 12 months from its first date of registration.
The mileage threshold means nothing in the case of this car, it’s the DATE factor that is the important part.
There is a small leeway of about 30 days on the service date requirement I believe.
MG CS will know if the service history is fully intact.
It could well be a motability car ?.
If you are concerned it has been involved in an accident etc, you could pay to run a car vertical check ?.
If the car has been subject to any type of insurance claim, it will show on the report !.
Good luck 👍

It's 28 days.

Assuming the vehicle has had two services, then it would be interesting to see the recorded mileages at those services - i.e. whether it has been regularly used, or used for 1 year and not the next.

If all checks out OK, then it's an almost new car with that mileage :)

I'm like mj224 above. Bought new Jan 2020 and now done about 30,000, no problems so far. Very good car, but be aware range limits trips to there-and-back of about 100 miles, a bit more in summer. Very good value second-hand.

I'm buying the long range which I believe will do around 180 miles in winter, although I've heard that it could be as low as 160.
Thanks for info though, and I'm glad you've had no problems.
Can I ask how much the service cost is likely to be?
I've heard so many different stories about being ripped off.
Cheers 👍

I think the long range will probably do more like 180, but you must remember range is greatly affected by speed (normal is deemed to be about 60-65 mph), ambient temperature, internal temperature if heating, and blower. You will soon learn how it works! Great cars to drive though.

My LR ZS has averaged 3.3 miles / kWh over 5600 miles since Jan.
Tuesday it was very cold, windy & raining when I drove up the A14 to get a new windscreen due to stone damage.
I guess 20 miles each way at 70, I live 1/2 mile from the A14. Heater on , lights, AC & wipers. I got 2.6. I used ACC so little / no regen.

I went the next day shopping via the back roads so 30-60 mph & got 3.
When I see my son in London I can get 4 plus due to the low speed.

To date with a mix of home charging & external I'm paying 3.4 p per mile.

So charging to 100% & down to 20% at 3.3 m / kWh my range is 75x3.3x.8 =198 m and at 2.6 m/kWh it is 156 m

My ZS LR was bought new in Jan this year. Firstly it's been totally reliable. Everything functions brilliantly & it's great to drive. Secondly, it's range is really good even in this cold snap. I fully balanced charged to 100% at -1c & the car still showed 299 miles in normal mode. Eco showed 308 miles. I believe the battery heating may have come on during the charge. But I'm not sure. In my running about over the last two days ACTUAL range has worked out to just under 260. That was taking the battery down to 21% & extrapolating the last bit of range. I don't normally take the battery down to very low percentage figures as it's not a good thing to do by all accounts. My mileage over the last two days has taken in A12/A14 cruising at 60mph (much better range at 60) & town & country road driving. In summer the car easily exceedes the WLTP figure of 273 miles by some way. It's all good.
