I just got my car back after having it looked at by the dealer for the 2nd time regarding steering clicking while turning and squealing brakes when reversing. The first time I took it regarding the clicking May, they claimed they couldn't hear anything but "tightened the bolts". I drove away and heard the clicking immediately on the way home. In hindsight, I should have taken it back and made them come for a drive with me.
This was their response after the 2nd visit -
Front brakes squealing when reversing.
Road tested and confirmed brakes squealing but only in
reverse. Lifted car and inspected braking system. Found
evidence of excessive brake dust build up. Cleaned down
brakes and relubricated sliding pins. Road tested and squeal
no longer present.
Ok happy enough there, I'm sure it will return when the dust builds up again as they cleaned it in May and it started again. I will drive in 1 KERS every few drives to try to stop this build up.
Now for the main point of the visit:
Clicking sound when turning, been seen to before in May 2025
Road tested for 10 minutes and heard a small click on one
turn. Checked and ensured all suspension and steering
components are operational as expected and bolts are torqued
to spec. Road tested again and could not replicate noise.
Customer to monitor and supply video of noise occurring upon
rebooking.
I was furious when I picked it up and they gave this response, but unfortunately I was late for another appointment as they were an hour late to return my car due to "paperwork". That meant I couldn't go for a drive with them to replicate the noise. It's happening on almost every turn so I can't see how they only heard it once. I asked how they road test the vehicles and the guy said "we drive it extensively for 1km". I thought this was a joke. 1km? That could be 3-4 turns.
I'm not sure where to go from here. I don't want to touch it myself. I am considering taking it to a steering specialist outside of MG dealer, but am worried this might affect the 10 year warranty, which was part of the reason I bought the car. But the clicking is really ruining what is otherwise a great car in my opinion (so far). Alternatively, I could try another MG dealer service and make sure I drive it with the person diagnosing.
So after 2 visits, I am still at square one. They assured me it isn't a safety issue, but reading this thread there is differing opinions. At the end of the day I just want the noise gone, whether it's a safety thing or just an annoyance. I've owned it just over 1 year and it has ~10500km. I got so fed up I even looked at what resale was but after calming down I really like the car, minus this one annoying issue.
